LHD CAMPER

I've been to look at an lhd camper which was imported/UK registered in May 2005. The headlights have been changed to rhd but the speedo still reads in KMs as does the odometer. According to the thread on importing busses from Germany that's not a problem because the speedo is not a testable item for the MOT test.
Howver, the rear fog lamp has been disconnected but the vehicle still passed an MOT test in April 2006. That doesn't sound right to me .
The engine was replaced 22,000 miles ago (1.9 w/c) but the V5 reg.doc.
gives the engine size as 1888cc. It is allegedly a genuine VW replacement engine so how come it's not 1915cc? I've seen the German receipt for the engine but I couldn't really understand it. Anyone any constructive comments please?

Hi Bowton,

my US import failed for not having a fog lamp

they have to be fitted and working for any vehicle used on the road after 1980.

You will need to reconnect it for an MOT.

The previous MOT Station would be for a bit of bother over passing it previously.

Thanks Blurb 55, If I do buy the van I would try & move the fitting/bulb across to the other side but if that is not possible I would fit one or better still two on the rear bumper.
Regarding the relacement engine, it has a DG code, was fitted in 2001 & the receipt states 1888cc. (not 1915cc) is that correct?

A DG engine is 1915cc.. not 1888cc... dunno if that is a typo or what.. is the 1.9D/TD (as in Golfs etc) engine 1888cc?? maybe some dope thought the D in "DG meant it was a Diesel....
Fog lamp should be working.. sure it isnt just the bulb blown in the "correct" side? Some had twin fogs, some only 1 and some none....

The engine number for the replacement engine is DG 072392 & was fitted in Germany in 2001 so presumably it must be 1915cc & the paperwork is wrong.

fog light is easy fix - dunno why anyone bothers fitting extra ones - there is a space in the correct side cluster - just wire it in yourself

don't panic about the V5 - you can get it changed yourself

just make sure the rest of the bus checks out

I've seen the V5, the German TUV (MOT), UK MOT, receipts for the new engine & other work. There is also a DOT certificate from when the van was imported & the UK registration applied for/granted in May 2005.

Anything else to check apart from the usual things when buying a used vehicle?

i have a lhd with no fog light either and it passed its mot last september before i bought it. my brother in law is a mechanic who does mot's and is trying to find out if you need one. he thinks it all depends when the van was made.

Unfortunately the van has been sold to someone else so I'm still looking for a replacement camper. Thanks to everyone for their advice on all things lhd. :)

I know its a while since this thread but i have found out that if a van is registered before 01/04/1980 then you don't need to have a rear fog lamp. Just in case you were pondering over this!
