Rebuild of 1.9 DG: Water Pump to Head Flange Leak

After another long weekend, my 1.9DG (1991) has been refitted to the van and is running once again!
However, as with these things I have a water leak from pipe that runs from the water pump to No 1 & 2 water jacket (Water Pump to Head Flange). I did purchase a 'complete' engine gasket set, but the there was no replacement o-ring to go in the inside the metal pipe flange. So I simply replaced the flat gasket from the gasket set and put the original shaped o-ring back. Hence my issue I believe.
Does anyone know where I can get hold of this replacement o-ring? I've searched JustKampers & VWHeritage and can not find it anywhere. Do I actually need it as the o-ring doesn't make contact with the metal surface of the water pump?
