Wheres me Thermostat ? (and other stupid questions)

Forgive my ignorance but I cant find where the thermostat is on my 1982 1.6 CS diesel. Is it under the housing at the top of the block or is it the housing where the hose goes into the water pump ?
On going cooling worries for me and I need some advice please......
I popped a hose - in engine bay where it meets the plastic front to back pipe twice in last 2 weeks and want to eliminate the stat as the cause of overpressuring.
But whist having a look today...... with the bleed screw on top of the rad out and "pumping" both rubber pipes in the engine bay my assistant couldnt feel any air pressure at the bleed valve.......
Although both to and from pipes get toasty (very!) hot at the engine bay end of things they remain cold at the in and out pipes at the radiator end ?
It gets pressure when up to temp and I have bled it as best I can and to check theres water in there have had it flowing out of the bleed valve with engine revving.... and even removed the fan sensor switch to ensure water was in fact in the rad
Guessing the radiator matrix is blocked and needs a reverse flush with the garden hose
IOne final question...... what direction is the flow .... ie - the "top" pipe that goes into the cylinder head is that the supply from or to the radiator ?
Feel a bit of a numpty asking these basics but cant find the answers despite looking
Thanks in advance of any replies
All the best
