Paint Job -Costs ?

Had an expensive paint and body job three years ago. Unfortunately seams weren't welded right and some cracking at seams. Some bubbling appearing on bottom of doors and lower rear panel seams. Also some paint flaking off primer on sliding door, not much but naughty as shows poor prep.

Been to Classic restorer who has quoted to completely restore replace all panels, high build paintwork , windows out and in, reset doors , paint interior of doors and shuts etc. Seen quality of his work which is exceptional. But given quote of £3,500 - £4,500 how long is this likely to last on a 30 yr old vehicle? and is this a reasonable price? (Previous job cost 2,000 plus but no comeback unfortunately other than in another life!)

Comments please,

£50

wet and dry, vactan, 2 paint tins, foam roller, foam brushes and own time

Seams show a bit of rust again....flat back and repaint at will :ok

It's the future.

Unless you are showing it why have the pain of seeing the seams bubbling through your £3k paint job? Unless you get Mick to do the van it's money down the drain....unless your seams are top notch to start with

Just a thought but I wonder how much a professional car body shop would charge to roller a T25? Including all the flatting back, say 3 coats?

I agree rolling is the future.

Jon.

If you stood still long enough outside Mick's, you'd have all your cracks welded up I'm sure. :D

Cracking? What were they brazed instead of being welded properly or something? Could well be the brazing flux has begun to corrode the seams perhaps.

Best bet is to remove all the rust and let in new metal and lead-load the joins and as you say, poor prep will spoil everything :x

I'd agree that maybe the roller route might be your best bet, particularly as you've already blown a lot on the Van as it is; it could end up being a very expensive exercise for you. I wouldn't ask a bodyshop to do it for you though, their hourly rate would be too much as they will be geared for spraying, which is much faster.

There is also something theraputic about rollering as well as getting to drive around for a few weeks a year with a rat van :D

Like it.

Dunno but I would be interested to hear how much your professional garage quotes you to roller it.

"Seams wern't welded right and starting to crack" I think if the saems have been welded and then filled they will crack anyway.
But until we see pics we wont know.
