Hi
My son needs a new gearbox as his has lost oil and failed. The van is an 85/86 1600cc non turbo diesel lump. The boxes that we have been offered and looked at have the slider gear shift in the casing. Where as our box has a simple bracket with two bolts for the shift rod. Also as hopefully from the photo's that I have uploaded the starter is positioned at 12.00 o clock. But we can re-use the bell housing. Its mainly the shift mechanism that confuses me as ours doesn't appear to be correct bolt on type for the boxes we have looked at.

You have a later type box , it has one ball on the selector lever and the reverse light switch on a housing sticking out the opposite side of the box.
Early boxes have 2 plastic balls on the selector lever and dont have the housing on the opposite side.

That sounds about right. Your description is bang on.
I am going to look under the box for a code as per your thread. I really don't want to change to an early gear shift arrangement as ours is in good condition and much better than some others I have seen.
A guy looks as if he has a box for us that will suit and so we may have moved on. Amazing the amount of different boxes fitted to these little blighters.

Just a quick thank you to every on who gave me a leg with this gearbox replacement problem.
We have located a gearbox of the correct type with about as much good history as there can be for 26 year old item.
There are so many threads on this question that I am confused as to who I have spoken with. But everyone has been uber helpful.
If anyone needs a runable dodgy gearbox to assist with a part ex or anything, we have one sat on my garage floor. Take it away.
