Dave recommended having the head rebuilt as good practice/peace of mind. I agreed, and lucky i did!! Lovely pictures below of the mess a EGR leaves behind Best to check them before they are bolted in!

How many mile on your engine Lloydy?

First thing I did on my van was blank the ERG off but it will still have 50k mile of crap in it

Mine had 140k

Wow thats a lot of carbon, worse than the ones I've stripped. One head had quite worn valve guides and damage to a GP thread so I rejected that. The other one was good except for some erosion damage around a few of the coolant galleries (prob due to insufficient coolant changes) which I had TIG'ed up then a skim. Valves were carefully scraped clean then finished off with scotchbrite and carb cleaner, then lapped. It certainly gives some peace of mind to be bolting together nice shiny pieces !

In all my years Ive never seen a head coked up as bad as that. I wouldnt be quick to blame the ERG though

not seen any Sprinter engines then Andrew - they blow by the injectors and build up massive deposits under the plastic trim cover

Yes he is, worth paying the extra for i'd say

Only recently weighed out £900 for a pair of trick heads for my boat anchor.
Money down the pan. They're still sitting in the boxes they came back in from the engineers.
Will have to stick them on eBay, but doubt I'll get even half that figure back.

Im not a fan of EGR myself, just bungs up a good engine and your not gonna save the world as in the long run you will use more fuel to overcome the strangled engine...bin it is the best idea.

Am I the only one still trying to work out exactly What the blithering heck this post has to do with anything? Or have you all given up?

Hmm, the old EGR thing....
I think we can all agree they are a bit of a waste of time. Does anyone know if i have EGR on my 1.9 tdi engine? if so where i taps into the induction system?

Actually, i seem to remember that for Landies you could get a professional looking blanking plate and what have you, is anything like that available to us?

It might have been blanked off, ask whoever fitted it. I'm having the blanking plate fitted, but all the EGR stuff left in place. It'll look like I still have it then. On the AFN it connects to the inlet manifold, I don't know what you have?

He's lamenting the fact he's forked out on new heads for his f o r d powered t25, but is now booked in with dave for tdi conversion
