Speedo issues

I have been meaning to post this for a while, and although this post answers the 'jumping', 'dancing' or 'bouncing' part, it doesnt explain the dramatic over reading....

As the aforementioned post, my speedo dances about between 0 and 45ish (indicated) mph. Once at 50ish it reads quite steady, a shame that indacated 50 is in reality 35mph.

Any ideas?

Thats a lot NIJ...they do over read by about 10% from the factory but what you are describing is much more than that.
A few things to consider:

Is it the original speedo? the number written on the bottom of the dial indicates it's gearing and yours could be wrong for the vehicle.
Wheels....are they original 14 inch 185R14C's?.....smaller the diameter the faster the wheels will turn and the higher (relative) the speedo will read.

As for the dancing about:

Has it got it's original external C clip on the square drive end of the inner speedo drive cable coming out the centre of the N/S/F grease cap?
Kink in the cable
Cable dry and needs some light oil on it

The ones i have had with this have had faulty speed heads.

the internals drag lots more than they should and give a false reading.

wd40 dosent seem to work , a different speedo sorted it!

Hi Martin.
I was gonna add (but forgot as it was bedtime) it is on standard wheels & correct tyres.
It has the original speedo too. It also has the external C clip. Ill have a look at greasing thanks.

I was dreading someone would say that as I wanted to keep the original mileage. Tho seams the only option.

Cheers guys
