Setting for contact breaker points " litre air cooled

Hello All,
Can any one help please? I have a type 4 two litre engine air cooled with distributor, points, condensor etc. We are trying to find what setting/gap we should have for the points and cant find it any where. Not even in y Haynes. Any help appreciated

0.6mm is a good place to start. A T25 shouldn't have points but I run a 009 dizzie without any problems. Try the gap at 0.5mm & 0.7mm as well to see what works best for your engine. Mine definately pulls better at 0.6mm.

Job done, had van engine running...and re-starting! It has been stood for 5 ears so am pretty chuffed. Only downside it developed an oil leak after about 30 mins running

As a rough and ready guide, the card from the back of a rizla packet is close enough. Used that a few times when stuck out in the wilds in a bug

Been to bed a few times since setting the last set on a Volkswagen 4 cylinder bosch distributor but I seem to remember the correct setting was 49 - 52 degrees set to the 4cyl scale on your trusty dwell meter.
Fag packet...PAH!
I would set closer to 49 side (larger gap) as the dwell increases as the points (foot) wears. Don't forget a smear of grease on the cam lobes.
The timing will also need checking as a result of changing points although if set correctly in the first place it shouldn't be far out.

Fag packet pah? It was all we had in an emergency and got us home a few times! Agree on the dwell meter though as its accurate and feeler gauges become useless if the points develop a pip on them through burning. To be honest, I was really glad to see the back of points as they do wear/burn and that affects performance as well as economy. Hard to see how they can be set properly without a dwell meter.

Obviously not an issue for your average home mechanic nowadays but for those working on engines with CB points a dwell meter is an absolute must. Back in the day...every man and his dog owned a Gunson tech tune multimeter/dwell meter all singing n dancing....

Or you could buy something like: which will second as volt/amp/ohm and tachometer..so very useful

Well it feels like only yesterday Kev .....
Dwell meters aside, everyone should own a good multimeter and as that one does dwell/tacho as well....bonus.
