Water Pump

Im trying to change the water pump on a 1983 DG.. Ive undone the bolts going into the thermostat housing. Ive disconected all the rubber pipes, the housing will not budge. There is a metal pipe going into the housing that some clever dick has silcon sealed.. Ive looked in the manual and looks like it should just pull off.. Am I missing something obvious or should I break out the hammer..

You have undone the 3 M8 nuts that secure the pump to the engine block ?

Didnt get that far, couldnt get the thermostat housing off.. I think I have to live with a noisy pump for a while. I wish I could find a garage that would do a engine swap.. I think its going to be my best hope.

Not just a noisey pump.. It knocks abit, leaks allot and is very tierd. I dont know if I should keep throwing money at it or take a risk and swap it for a second hand lump.
Any idea what a garage would charge to replace a water pump as its beat me.

Are you SURE that's not just tappets ? Most unloved vans knock until they are regularly ran for 20 minutes or more.
Fumar wrote: leaks allot
Leaks from where ? Could just be a hose or pipe and an easy fix ... many previously neglected vans have leaks (our's did).

Define 'tierd' ... you may be expecting more than a 1.9 can deliver, realistically they peak at 65 (folks who say 'they'll do 85 all day' are dillusional and/or need a new speedo) and can be left for dead by most poxy chav chariots. If you expect 90+mph and 30mpg best buy a T4 TDi or a Scooby conversion for your 25.

You either 'invest' a load on a recon OR you could be buying an engine that's worse than the one you can't wait to bin.

If you can't change a water pump yourself you'd better either win the lottery or learn quick ... garages have to make a living and pay for premises and staff. Many won't touch a T25 anyway and those that will may be staffed by baboons who failed the charm audition at $ hit-fit. Do you own a Haynes manual ? Have you read the Wiki ?

I did read the wiki.. I have no idea why it wont budge. The pumps noisey and has play in it.. I gave up after 2 hours, instead of risking doing more damage than I could do good.. Theres hot air coming through the heaters., so I asume waters getting pumped around. I took it out for a drive seems ok.
I dont expect 30mpg and 80 mph.. I dont care that its noisey, guttless and leaves a puddle when I park (Pushrod seals I think)
I just want to be able to use it, its something Ive allways wanted to own and I love it to bits. I assumed when I bought it I would pay a few hundered quid per MOT and it would be a money pit.
If I knew I could get it changed for a reasonble price locally Id do that rather than risk breaking stuff I cant mend till Im allitle more competent.

Yea.. I seem to get through a fair bit of oil.. no blue smoke so I think its leaking out rather than burning.

if you can clean and degrease the engine spotting the leaks is a lot easier

Does it leak coolant at all ? Oil leaks are usually
relatively simple to cure ... coolant from waterjacket seals is the real timebomb

I dont think so, but it was very low on coolant, was allot of air in the system I have filled it up and not noticed any leaks. Im going to dig out my AA card and see how well it handles a long run. I would like the pump fixed if anyone knows a reasonable mechanic in the Notts area I would be very greatfull.

Rather than start a new topic, I though I'd ask here as its particularly relevant.
Bit of background (skip down if you just want the questions):
I've been losing coolant at an ever increasing rate recently, first thought was the heater matrix- small puddle in cab (i assumed rain) but temp gauge went way up and still getting cold air when driving, topped up coolant and matrix was steaming so replaced. Accomplished in 2 hours, felt very smug.
Unfortunately on the way home on Monday temp gauge went up, heater was still cold (again), and I found I was missing 2 litres of the blue stuff. Assumed I'd been a bit special and not bled the system properly after the heater matrix replacement, topped up, bled and seemed ok. Van has been parked since.
Last night noticed a small puddle, under the engine. Found coolant dripping off the bottom of the oil filter. Lots of cleaning around and drying up and I found its coming from around the water pump pulley seal.
Engine is a 1983 1.9 DF with the metal stat housing and my questions are:
New pump required or can you replace just the seal? I assume both would require pump removal?
How much other stuff do I need to remove to get the pump out (wiki is good but for a 2.1 and very few pics) ?
How boned am I in terms of finding spares if I break anything removing the pump & stat?
Pic of the leak:

no repairs just replace.
