This is what my tow bar say's.

The handbook states that nose weight is 75kg or in Finland 100kg if unladen weight is not exceded and the trailer hitch allows.

Syncro can tow 2500kg if the rear axle load exceeds 1000kg.

But....? 2.1 2000kg and turbo diesel 1500kg ??

Min draw bar weight = 4% of trailer weight.

My handbook includes the 16" versions but gives no different trailer weights between syncro models other than engine.

A syncro can legally tow 2.5t only with special certificate from VW. Not as standard as people are being informed by others.
This certificate will only be issued by VW once they have fitted the upgrade package to your vehicle.
No longer available and a substantial cost when it was.

This is the handbook dated 1990.

I have tried to decipher the Finnish but it has been a long time since I read the Moomins in the original text.

According to the handbook to tow 2500kg you need a 57 or 82 kw engine, 82 is a DJ. and clause 1 at the bottom which reads.

"Taka-akselipaino vahintaan 1000kg". Which means rear axle weight of at least 1000kg.

To get a rear axle rating of 1000kg perhaps this applies.

Syncro ikkunapakettiauto rear axle load is 960kg, but then add the clause "ilman istuimia kantavuus on n 65 kg suurempi" which I take as meaning "without seats the carrying capacity increases by 65 kg" which would take you over 1000kg and allow you to tow 2500kg.

ikkunapakettiauto is a caravelle or multivan ??

So in theory take the seats out of a caravelle or whatever a ikkunapakettiauto is and away you go. 2.1 and 57kw only.

Complicated :?

According to my handook which is in English, the max towing weight for a Turbo Diesel Syncro is 1500 kgs and 2000 kgs for a petrol version. The maximum drawbar weight is 75 kgs no matter what version.

However, what Russell says is correct as there is a 'special certificate' which allows 2000 kgs for a Turbo Diesel Syncro and 2500 for a petrol version with a drawbar weight of 100 kgs

So ..... who has the 'special certificate' then?

No mention of a special certificate on the Finnish 1990 handbook. Just take your seats out.

There is .... I can see it in the picture. Its the one with 'Poikkeusluvalla2' which means 'as an exception' on Google translate and 'with exception' on the app on my iPhone

The exception is this:- suomessa voimassa nama arvot, auton omapaino kuitenkin ratkaisee which Snufkin tells me translates to this:- These values are valid in Finland, the car unladen weight, however, determines.

So it is the unladen weight plus the towing weight that is important. The tow hitch weight of 100kg stays the same with a heavier trailer.

This makes sense as most manufacturers now refer to the Gross combined weight of the towing vehicle and the trailer. The weight of the trailer has to go down as the weight of the vehicle increases. VW were just being modern.
