Is there a special tool to remove? I had to grind down a 19mm socket to fit......

personally i find a 13mm socket to be fine, yours has probably been fitted with something bigger

That makes more sense tbh.....it is a VERY tight fit

Sounds like someone has muggered around and put something else in...

Bench grinder (the bolt head was very close to the cowling on the base of the sump) and just ground the outer edge of the socket.

Ah, glad its not just me who had the same problem! Normal 19mm socket won't fit in the recess, so had to use an angle grinder and work round the outside of the socket to reduce the outside diameter.
Is 19mm not the original size sump plug then?

From what I can gather no, but I am glad i am not the only person who this has happened to (no offence)
TBH if it was then I assume that we would have seen 'WBX sump plug removal tool' either forsale or queries.
I also kinda expect a magnet to gather any swarf on a standard sump plug......

confession, as the person who put the 19mm sump plug in i would like to give my side of the story !

when i got the van i started to change the oil only to find the 13mm ? plug completely rounded off, i persevered and drained the oil , went to a vw dealer who sold me a new plug and only when i got it home did i find that it couldn`t be tightened, i then spent ages with a grinding stone on a black and decker destroying a perfectly good socket until it fit, this socket was then hung on the garage wall and used every time the oil change was due, i forgot to give it to nij when he got the van ! i have just gone into the garage and found it, sorry !
