Dear all,

Can anyone out there recommend a decent door card retaining clip? I recently replaced my sliding door card and bought trim clips from a couple of VW parts suppliers to attach it and have had nothing but problems ever since. One set of clips doesn't fit while the other is of such cheap plastic that they either break while fitting or 'pop out' of their holes after closing the door leading to much wailing and nashing of teeth from me. (I think I may even have used mild profanity after it happened for the third time)

I am looking to replace all of my door cards but I am obviously reluctant to do so until I can find a reliable door clip. I have found many mentions of people replacing their door cards without apparant difficulty so this may be just another example of my being T25 monkey but any help or suggestions would be gratefully received.

I appologise if this subject has been done to death elsewhere but I have been unable to find a satisfactory response in either this forum or the archive.

Ive just had the same problem and had to use these

can leave the screw heads black, with a silver washer, paint the washer...go all silver etc etc....but get a decent round headed screw, and yes you have to go through the door cards....but it does make them easier to remove, with less chance of breaking trying to remove them. Will do some photos later if I remember.

I used the same as Katie.
I got dark brown ones from Screwfix - a bag of 100.

Or buy the correct ones from a VW dealer. It also helps to pre bow the panel first I use a couple of ratchet tie down straps around them and leave it for a week.

I had this problem too however i solved problem by first buying genuine clips with vw logo stamped on them rather than a bag of brittle easy snapping rubbish. ( got my genuine ones off megabug) then to get a nice tight fit bought a packet of beetle rubber door card rubbers (about £5 for 50) and stuck them into original holes in bus with a bit of pva glue than new panel pins required quite a hard thump with side of fist to fix and have not moved, popped or fell out since. hope this helps

you can use firtree clips. they fit perfectly. if you are doing the rest of the cards then put them in fisrt and then upholster over them. you can get em off of ebay. 9mm i think but you will have to measure the hole in your van. the ones for Rovers are perfect. i went round a scrap yard and took the clips out of all the different cars to see which were best so this is how i know. most upholsterers use fir tree clips and you will need em if you have piping.
There is a way to cut and fit them into already upholstered panels as i had to be inventive but as said before, put em in first.

I am in the lucky position that I ended up with two sliding door cards as the first turned up damaged (nobody wanted it back) which has allowed me to discover all of my door clip problems using the damaged door card as a Guinea Pig. I currently have the sliding door card held in with the screw and expanding plastic kind of fastener which sounds like the route a lot of you have also had to go down. I can live with it if it means my cards don't pop off and the link that Katie sent shows I can make it a lot neater with cover caps.

Top tips bigherb and 2020mad, I had thought of bowing the door card first but the method in my head involved a complicated system of weights being placed on the top and leaving it for a couple of weeks. It never occured to me to use any of the half dozen or so Thule luggage straps that I have dotted around the home and van!

I will put up a new post if I discover the holy grail of door card clips but in the meantime thank you all.

these are what you need and are the right size. 100 will almost be enough.

Also, if you get the cards form JK, check the holes are the right size in the 3 at the very rear.

Update.

There was much good advice from my original question including use of 'fir tree' clips and 'bend your door card' before fitting. My top tips would be bend the door card for a couple of weeks using luggage straps, use 'fir tree' door clips (I got mine from Bresco, 8.5mm width, suitable for Rover) AND put a screw with cap in the rear of the sliding door towards the door hold-back where there are no clip holes.

My door card has torn due to a lack of clip holes near the door hold-back so putting a screw in is really important, no matter what it does to your interior aesthetics!

The Bresco clips are great everywhere else and hold the front and rear cards with no problems.

Hope this helps anyone else looking to update their interior.

i have done the same as 2020mad for years and never had a problem

it depends on how thick the vinyl/leather is and how many layers are folded around on to the back as to if the vw clips work.
