Reverse Switch location

ive got a 1980 2l air-cooled model and i cant seem to find the reverse switch on the gear box, currently its got a rather crappy switch on the dash to operate the reverse lights and frankly i dont like it (even with the associated fun of turning it on at tailgaters) and want it all nice n automatic, is it possible the switch has been removed and blanked off, if it even had one to begin with, where should i be looking for the switch or blank? non of the manuals i have are particularly forthcoming with that kind of info
