Today whilst using my 2.1 DJ Van the red coolant warning light started flashing. However the temp gauge read as normal and there were no obvious signs of overheating. I checked the coolant level in the expansion tank and its to the brim. There was no water in the top up tank but no signs of a leak in engine bay. And no signs of water having leaked onto the ground beneath the van.

Question is should there be water in the top up tank, And would it be wise to fill this to the max mark?

Or is it simply because its bloody freezing cold out there and its just old age.

Have read some of the old posts and some say it could be a furred up sensor. Or an electrical problem with fuse 43.

It certainly would be wise - first thing to check I think. Dont't just fill it with water though. Use the correct coolant mixed correctly. Also check why you appear to have lost coolant - learnt this the hard way in the Picos but was lucky to have Dave (futbus) and various others with us.

Check the plug is onto the sensor on the header tank. Check the wiring is ok by removing the plug and bridging the contacts with a piece of wire, with the ignition on the light should flash a few times and then go out. The top up tank should always be on Max except if you check it when the engine is hot ... then it can be over the Max mark. NEVER let the top-up tank run empty and DEFINATELY NEVER run with a red light on EVER.

You're talking a £1,000 lesson here if you screw up.

Thanks for the advice have cleaned up the contacts for the sensors.And topped up the coolant in the top up tank. It appears to have done the trick as the light has now stopped flashing will keep an eye on it though.
