Hi

Its time for me to do another oil and filter change , however last year when i did it for the first time i put the 4.5 litres of 15w40 in (0.5 in filter and 4 in engine) and it only came upto the bottom of the dipstick!?

Its a 1.9 petrol dh engine, should i just add another bit till it reaches the full mark on the dipstick or leave it at the low mark? (wiki says use 4.5 litres)

Also is it ok to use a unipart filter or should i stick to a mann one. (cant find the mann one locally and costs about 9 quid to get one posted...

Any advice would be appreciated...

Are you sure its the correct dipstick? As for the filter.Do you not have a local GSF.

it only came upto the bottom of the dipstick!?

Do you fill the filter with fresh oil before fitting it?

£9 is cheaper than having to shell out for a new engine

no gsf , euro car parts do a bosch filter that is compatible but not sure if thats any better?

Looking at brickwerks site its about 12.24 including the shipping, i guess i could buy a few for the next few services and spread the postage costs.

As to the dipstick, how do i know if its original??
I put 0.5 litres of fresh oil in the filter and 4 litres in the oil filler neck as described in the wiki...

Measure it.And ask on here for someone to measure theirs

Pretty flat, may have been a very slight lean to the kerb side but nothing youd notice.
Will measure it at the weekend and post, keep her garaged at a local farm when not using so dont have instant access.

If it's leaning to the nearside then that must be the litre out on the stick. Dipstick should have a red collar ? 4.5 litres is the amount, you don't have to pre-fill the filter either

On mine, 1.9 DG ex Synchro engine.
Green plastic cap on dipstick (sits on top of dipstick tube) to full mark notch is 330 mm.
An oil fill to this takes the 4.5 litres.
Others please confirm as who knows what may have happened to some of these engines!!

Bosch one is good....prefered over the Unipart although I will say generally Unipart stuff is pretty well sourced and probably a Coopers.

Make sure you are on the flat when dipping
Run for 30 seconds leave for 30 seconds..DIP.
Fill to the max but bare in mind oil does expand so a few millimeters below will be fine.

Always replace your sump bung washer for new...it is a use once 'form and seal' think it's 18NM tightness.

Ok measured the dip stick and its also 330mm to the full mark. Red plastic cap on top.

When i get round to changing oil i will level up perfectly and see how far up 4.5 litres goes. Waiting for the snow/salt to clear before taking her out though...

On another note , how often should one change the spark plugs.?

Single electrode standard copper core plugs: every 12,000 miles a fair bit longer for irridium and other harder tipped types and a lot longer (up to 40K) for triple and quad electrode types.
As most of us don't do 'average 14K' a year in our campers then go on condition and change if in any doubt.
