Right then - don't laugh but I need to replace my alternator belt as its looking worn - question is which size do I go for?? The spec on the belt is worn and cannot be read - same as the label on the alternator. Engine is a DG 1.9. From what I can gather there are different sizes for different alternators - all help appreciated.

Personally i would take it to your autopats place and get one slightly smaller to account for wear and stretching. I have an 83 DG and is seems to like a 1075 belt, recently tried an 1100 one and it got lose quite quickly.

There's only one belt for the 1983 Transporter 1.9 DG with 45A alternator
GSF supply good ones or go for a Baxter belt at Brickwerks

belt you need is 023 903 137A

Why can't people use a measuring tape nowadays? It's so simple to just measure round your pulleys. That way you cater for any changes made to the original set up.
For the hard of thinking you can even fill in boxes online to calculate it!

I thought the idea of the forum was to get good and honest advice from people who can pass on quality knowledge from experience (kevtherev) to those who don't know (me) and not get patronising comments (oldiebutgoldie)! Yep I admit its probably a laughable question to those who know (I did trawl thro wiki before asking) but I'll be the first to say I'm clueless in this dept.

This wasn't directed at you - it was a generality. There have been quite a few people asking the same question. If you need a new hat/shirt/jacket/belt/trousers etc. you measure yourself, if you need a plug for the bath you measure your plughole. Exactly the same principle with this. I am just pointing out something that is obvious.

I don't know what size belt fits your engine but if you were to have measured the required route you would have ascertained that the belt width was 10mm and the length was 1075mm. You would then have inwardly beamed in triumph that you had solved a near impossible conundrum all by yourself. Such are the steps towards enlightenment.

Plus I would lay a bet that there is the size printed o the belt, note that size and come back here and advice can be given as it is a possibility that some previouse personage has fitted an incorrecrt belt , maybe by section, maybe wrong length, maybe both.

Oh and as Oldie has pointed out, hes not having a go , what you could do is have a look at recent poists by the person you feel has either helps or hindered you and from this you will get an idea of how there humour or lack of it works,

Emancipation of my consciousness from an immature state of ignorance (by changing my alternator belt) is near! I thought that the alternator output was a critical element in the choice of belt - obviously not...thanks to nearly everyone involved in this thread

Did you look at the link that I posted so that you know how to measure it for yourself - who knows you may even be able to help someone else with your new found knowledge.
I, and many others on here, learnt things the hard way - we did not have the information at our fingertips that people have now from the internet. We had to think about what we were doing, technical information/manuals were difficult to obtain with such as what we had had to be gleaned from libraries, mates in the trade etc.. Direct measurement was the norm. Posting a question on a forum is a shortcut but the answer to a lot of queries can worked out by a poster's own thought. A forum will give you numerous answers usually but the poster is the person with the physical object and will still have to decide for himself which is the most accurate and relevant one.
(Although a lot of us have to use this to get to the root of a query)

yes.. don't buy cheap belts..they scream at you

The belt calculator gave me an answer, however, I was still not sure wether to go for 1075 or 1100 - it says it should be used to replace unused belts! I now know that I need a 1075 (cheers all) and shall be visiting my local GSF today and can also put this thread to RIP until I post another to wind you up oldie . I agree the internet can instill laziness - its also responsible for a load of pointless tosh such as Twitter etc - but hey, its good for a bit of banter

From one novice to another I feel your pain. I 've got a DG but with an 90amp alternator and lord knows what else. 1075 or 1100? Who knows? I drove it to GSF, took it off in the carpark and went in and asked for a new one.

Lets put it this way....if the correct belt size results in the adjuster being set towards it's maximum then anyone would be stupid not to return it for one the next size down.
Ideally, when correctly adjusted there should be 50% of the adjustment still left for when the belt stretches.

Another 'trick' is to buy one with a larger sectional width so it rides higher in the pulley making the same circumference tighter.
I quite often used to replace 9.5mm belts with 10mm ones but especially if the belt was riding low in the pulley.
This has the added bonus of giving the new belt a different unused area of the pulley to drive upon (obviously make sure the belt does not sit proud but still sits in the pulley)
