Engine machine shop - recommend me one!

Would be great if someone could recommend me an engine machine shop!

Currently got my engine dismantled and want to get the big ends and mains reground. (2.0 litre Aircooled "CU" code)

Not having a lot of luck with local engine shops. Getting a lot of "Oooh havent done one of them in years" kind of answers :?
And tbh I would rather take it to someone who does Vdub engines regularly.

Based in Halifax and work in Leeds, so round there would be ideal, but to be honest I am prepared to ship it out if the guys know what they are doing. Spoken to Jim at Stateside but he isn't doing machine work at the moment.

Drawing blanks and would appreciate hearing your experiences good or bad

Ta

Ben

Hello,

IMHO you would do well to take the crank and the 2 case halves to the machinist. He should then be able to measure how much machining is needed, and supply the correct oversize bearing shells.

It may sound silly but I use a local company that specialises in motorcycle engines and Briggs and Stratton.

Cordialement,

S.E.P in kegworth leicestershire. You may drop lucky and get away with a polish, i wasnt sure on mine as no 4 journal looked like it was tapered to the eye but when i measured it was in spec so i had both midland engines in leicester and s.e.p double check them.

Heres some specs taken from the Tom Wilson Book. Hope its of some help.

#1-3 journal diameter 2.3609 - 2.3617 (59.971 - 59.990)

#4 journal diameter 1.5739 - 1.5748 (39.984 - 40.000)

Rod bearing journal diameter 1.9677 - 1.9681 (49.97 - 49.98)

Hi,just spotted this and you may be sorted by now.
If not try Volksparts, various places around London,i got my crankcases line bored for £40,and the crankshaft reground for £40,and then i bought the oversize bearings from them. That was about 5-6 years back but it was good work and amazing value.my motor was an air cooled 1600.
Cheers and good luck with it.
