Syncro newbie

Hello everyone.
I recently bought a caravelle syncro non runner and thanks to all the great info on this forum i now have a runner. I have sorted the engine, suspension and brakes out ,almost, but i now have a problem that i know nothing about.
The gearbox has been leaking, it only looks like a tiny seep but obviously i do not know how long its been like this and so i don't know how much fluid is in the box. The leak looks like its coming from a cover plate that has 6 bolts and is situated
below the gear selector rod. I would like to change the gearbox oil ,and whilst empty, remove the cover and replace the gasket. Does anyone know what is behind this cover and is it safe to take off ? I have driven the van a little and all seems normal
with the gears and diff locks.
Thanks for any help. :ok

You need to be careful there ...... going in there behind that plate is like going into the wardrobe in Narnia ......

Thanks for the encouraging reply! I would have thought that VW would have put a warning on the cover if it was THAT dangerous.
