I'm not by any means an expert but the few times either myself or others I have been with have got stuck the following from my kit has been used.
8t rope 8m long with 4.75t tested bow shackles. This was from Rope services uk £42
Pair of waffle boards. EBay around £35
Spade
Oh and I have been pulled out by Jed's winch.

WhS and a highlift jack (can also used as a hand winch) would always have a selection of tow strops of different lengths for confined spaces which can always be put together to make one long rope also the ability to make tea. First rule of a major recovery have a cup of tea and formulate a plan rather than rushing in, stops adrenaline madness and will stop you braking something/hurting someone and will probably get you out quicker and safer

Often a level head, ashovel, hi lift and waffle boards will get you out of nearly anything most guys I know have been offroading for years without winches.

The last time I needed recovering, all I needed was a farmer in a Discovery and an old bit of rope! (This was a 1995 Corsa though, and it was just a soft verge!)

I can quite honesty say I have never hit my toe with a hammer

A shackle, although the same weight as a bag of sweets wouldn't cause me to many nights of lost sleep

Yep, never under estimate the shovel and a pair of waffle boards, having a winch just makes you think you can go further and get more stuck

Neither have I, reckon you should do it and make a video of it bound to get loads of hits, excuse the pun. Yep a shackle doesn't weigh much but would sting like f*** if it hit you in the right place

mmm gives me an idea for a game at syncropendence

Actually we might, just had a look at our stats and although our UK hits are about 10% of our total, we have 94,069 hits in about a year

not bad for a none profit amateur set up like ours

plus the 233,16 from the you tube channel and 191,503 from Jakes and the Vimeo channel with 10.400 hits all reated to

Curious to know why you are using a rope with a higher rating than your shackles.
That means when something gets over loaded and fails, it's your shackle rather than the rope, which means you now have a lump of metal at the end of a tight rope... Aka, a projectile.
