Noisy engine maybe?

Hi all
After 18 months of work my van is as ready as it will ever be for its mot . Its stood idle since 2009 ish and Im starting to run the engine up ready to start moving it. I serviced bout a year ago and gave it a oil change but its not really run for more than 20 mins max.
I eventually got it running at the weekend and it didnt sound good so stopped it put a litre of new oil in and it got better, the wife videod it on her phone on the second run and it sounds better but still clattery on the left hand side. Heres the link
http://youtu.be/IC81-LerFrY" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;.
The mis-fire has cleared up and its idling/ ticking over fine, its just the clatter left. Now Ill be the first to admit Im not used to old engines especially flat fours. Am I being paranoid and it just a case of needing a good run? and some more oil?
Cheers for any help
James

Do a search for "tappets" and all will become clear.

These engines need running NOT parking up, almost 100% certainly tappets

Needs an oil and filter change anyway if left that long (15W40 mineral) and then it just needs a good 30 minute run and it will be as quiet as a mouse after those hydraulic tappets have filled with oil.
This is quite normal, don't worry.

Cheers for the replys guys
so even tho I changed the oil and filter a year ago , it would still be better to change the oil again even thou its just stood for a year?

Run it, and not on the drive. Needs a good 15 mile runaround. Noisy tappets is the most common question on here next to 'which oil'. Just drive the thing and then see if its still noisy. Chances are it won't be.
Clearly without the MOT thats not easy - unless you take a long spiral route to the MOT centre

Regarding oil change after 1 year....some on here change theirs twice a year. If you're saying you changed it just before it was laid up then fair enough, it won't need it! but just bare in mind that 15W40 mineral although recommended as the best for your engine, doesn't have a long life, not like a modern fully synthetic. So oil changes are necessary fairly frequently. VW said every 5,000 miles but thats the absolute most I would do between changes.
Also oil viscosity (thickness) has a massive baring on tappet noise, these old gals don't like the thin stuff, so if your last fill was with easy to get 10W40 this could be part of your problem.
