4 speed to five speed gearbox

Hi I believe I may have fallen into the trap of jumping in a bit... I have just bought a 5speed to replace my 4speed box because in top at the moment at 60mph the van is revving it's nuts off and very noisy, it's a 1900 petrol box in a diesel bell housing code 8e (5 speed) the van is a 1700 diesel high top. Any advice or ideas would be very much appreciated.... Thank you very much....Gareth.

Oh dear. I bow to others but my understanding is that the top gear in a five speed box is the same gear as the top gear in a four speed box. Also the four speed box is allegedly more robust. It sounds like you have another problem.

It's not fitted to the van yet but I was just wondering what peoples thoughts are on the matter.....what other problem do I have???

It kind of sounds like a clutch problem or something to do with the throttle. The guys are out there to help. Do you not have a trusted garage to check it out? That would be my first option. Good luck mate.

4.86 final drive with a 5th of 0.82 if it's original, probably higher ratio than whatever code box you are running, whether a KY can pull it is a different matter; KY is an around town/local engine not a long distance cruiser, but they do rev pretty well just don't have much oooomph, original gearbox for them is designed to get to 50 quickly and sit there all day if necessary

Whats the codes on the box'... as there are lots of different ratios out there..
Then at 60mph.. the 1.7d is about flat out.. gear it up and it wont be able to pull it.. its 57bhp (when new)
What wheels and tyres are you running?

Yeah the power thing did creep into my head after the event of purchasing it(should really stop these impulse buys). Anyone have an idea if the 1700 will pull the gears at all. Anyone fancy a cheap 5 speed box???...lol :D

What wheels and tyres are you running?

Running 185/14 on rear. I do have some 17" merc wheels I thought of putting on...would this help??

The code on the 5 speed is 8e.... Not of 4 speed code.

i am running a 1.9 d N/A and fitted a 5 speed box as i had the same thing, getting to 60 quick but when there screaming its breasticles off. i bought an AAP 5 speed box. it has made all the difference, now i can sit happily at 75-80mph and the engine is sweet. only noticeable thing is it takes a bit longer to get there (not much longer though) but i can live with that. you will need to change the front box mount from the 4 sp to a 5 sp or modify the 4 sp, i managed to use the 4 sp gear rods and stick, i just have to push the reverse lock out down to get 1st, i can live with that too. also i found the input shaft was longer on the 5sp so i trimmed it down a touch, could have swapped them over but it was an after thought after fitting new seals and using sealant :roll: on the bellhousing.

Sounds good mate thanks for the tips...looking like I may shy away from it now as the comments on here seem to point in the direction of there not being much benefit from changing as mine is just a 1700d it may not be able to pull the ratios and it's alot of work to find out you have completely cocked it up.....

1.9d has a good bit more grunt than the 1.7.... makes a difference

17" rims...depends on tyre size.. with correct weight rating for a heavy van...
