My 'new' Tristar Syncro Doka - The journey starts here...

Hello everyone! I'd like to introduce myself, as today I took the plunge on a Tristar Doka!

Names Samuel (aka Mule), and I'm based in Kent. Found afore mentioned Syncro from simply posting a wanted ad on Brickyard on the weekend. 'Beejay' came back right away with his one! It was previously Mike Ghia's (Jed kindly found a pseudo resto thread on Brickyard for me http://www.brick-yard.co.uk/forum/topic20727.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;). Now its sitting in my drive:

I'd been pouring over the likes of Jed's amongst others for a while, and could no longer deny it being the perfect 'coming together', which is the Syncro Doka. Where can't it go? What cant it do (when everything is copacetic)? Camp, off road, or simply commute, combined with the wedge gene makes the perfect vehicle. Well, once it has a Tdi in it :D

I've been in a T3 since I was 3 when my dad bought his one new (twin slider 'velle). Now I have a little family of my own, I have the Ej25 powered Multivan (soon to have an SVX powerplant) for speed, and now the Doka for off roading fun.

The Multivan:

Oh and I recently tracked down the owner of my dads original purchase almost 30 years ago and bought it back off her! Plan is to fix it up and give back to my dad...

Me and the velle then:

And now :/

Anyway, this is the start of a new adventure. Theres quite a few glaring bits which need fixing up immediately, top of the list being the stuck front and rear diff locks, but also some bits which have unfortunately just been neglected. Its got a bit more rash that I would have liked, but I want a good base on which to start. It should be fine for quite a while, but I'll start saving now for when it comes to having to get rid of the rot properly.

I'd like to thank Aidan for answering his phone at unfriendly hours on more than one occasion to help make an informed purchase. I very nearly went for Jed's Doka yesterday, which for anyone out there considering is pretty much mint, however my own OC traits dictated it needed to be RHD.

Anyway, can't wait to get out there in the mud with you lot so keep me posted on any meets.

I'll put up some close ups of the bad bits for peoples advice on remedial work.

Top effort!!

I am    with envy.

Tried emailing everyone on Tristars Syncro register that had RHD about 6 months ago to see if they fancied selling, but no joy.

You've got a belter there, even if you have to spend a bit.

There is just something about a doka that you can't explain, although I will try.

They are so stiff across the chassis to drive, loads of space in cab, loads of space in the rear, can use as a weekend camper, can use as utillity vehicle. Engine noise is quiet because outside the cab. Loads more pros and very few cons.

Mine is RHD 1.9DG on LPG, but head has just started to pass water, so Dr Lee is putting in his 2.1 to run on original carbs with the LPG. I haven't driven her in a while and am going cold turkey. My camper with the AFN with bigger injectors is more powerful, but heavier, and no where near as smooth. I would think twice about converting a Tristar Syncro to diesel, may have more torque, but not original( and I think there are only 4 or 5 RHD left so counts for a lot) and if you are going to use her everyday petrol is so smooooooooth! Put LPG on for about £1250/£1500, 100L tank in locker, you won't miss the space.

Really pleased for you, and welcome to the fold. There are some great characters on here and lots of knowledge.

Look forward to catching up with you in the mud.

Cheers Rich :D :D

PS can I have first dibs if you decide to sell

Jed I think you could be making a big mistake selling yours as its a belter too! I bet you will miss her!

Yeh I know. After hooking up with Samuel yesterday and after a pint, I started to think about a Subaru  I just need to spend some money through the books or I end up paying tax  The thing is with mine it has been so good, that apart from the gear box rebuild I have only had to buy oil and stuff for it, not a bad thing though I guess

I will give it a couple of weeks before I might put it up for sale, Samuel tried to get a pre sale snoop so fair play to him for trying to get in early.

Jed - I remember you mentioning on your YouTube Doka vid that a mate of yours was looking at producing "soft loadbed covers"

Any developments on that?

Mule - Nice Doka :ok

Please forgive me, Kent is beautiful, the garden of England.

But never Wales.

God calls here local rate, not long distance!!!
