They are out there, not many of them though.
Fantastic engine, owners of 1.7D "KY" engines really seem to love them!

Me, And as Simon says, I absolutely love it, It's reliable, very economical (36mpg with a high top) will cruise all day long at 55-60, flat out at a very loud 75 (but why rush, the faster you go the sooner you are back home again) great around town and country roads, pulls well up hills (even better since I put some 'Diesel Magic' in with a quarter tankful of fuel recently) Improved torque and fewer gearchanges needed now.

I feel you have to drive them like the old fashioned diesels, using the torque rather than the revs. I am aware that parts may become scarce for them in the future so will do a planned upgrade to 1Y or similar as and when the 1.7 gives up, In the meantime I,m Smiling!!

Hi Paul,

It is a Bosch injection system so I would think it should simply be a matter of finding a Diesel specialist rather than a VW or Campervan expert. They are common to a lot of vehicles though of course the exact bends in the pipes may differ from one vehicle to another. It would'nt be a problem to a competent Diesel mechanic.

Best of luck

I have got this engine. Although I had a few teething problems when I bought the camper the engine has been very reliable. It is definately not made for speed and struggles up hills but is economical, and cruises at 60-65mph. My engine is 23 years old now with 119,000 miles on the clock and still going strong. I do have a bit of white smoke on startup but clears after 10 mins or so and I suspect this is because the timing is out. That is my next job to get sorted!

I think so much of my engine that I put a great big sign on the back of my Camper saying 'I LOVE MY KY'............. I can only assume that there must be hundreds of fans of these engines out there cos I get loads of people tooting and waving at me, and they're not even in VW Camper vans!............... I think I may have started a fan club or something!?

My 89" is a 1.7 KY Diesel. Love it! Seems to manage a much higher speed when theres tonnes of gear in the back ha. Knackered Starter Motor and no 4th in my gearbox is a big hassle but thats soon to change hopefully when I manage to find the money. Pulls very well, I love the originality of it too as Simon says, theres not that many. Mines at 158,000 and still going strong. I will keep it as long as I can. :D

Hi I have one of these engines too.. Really like the torque as it pulls like a train, find it quite noisy at top end but dont have an interior in yet so may get bit more quiet when that is installed..anyone fitted a 5 speed box to there's????

5 speed box was an option on the ky

in my mind probably the best engine fitted to the t25/t3

all the ones i have had have silly high mileage and original engine , the highest was 320000 !

oh really...do you know what ratios they were as i bought a petrol 5 speed box with diesel bell, and now think the little old motor might not be able to pull it from what people say on here....not looking for speed just looking to be able to hold a conversation with my passanger without shouting at a speed of about 55-60....lol

I love my KY :ok 206,000 miles and still going. Getting sweeter everyday. Bound to go bang soon and may have to go 1.9TD but as they say "If it ain't broke don,t fix it!"

what you need to do is get the code;

https://club8090.co.uk/wiki/Ge ... saxle_Code" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

then you can see for yourself!- lots of codes , a few different ratios;-

http://www.brick-yard.co.uk/VehicleSpec ... fo/gbx.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

then you can find out how fast your van goes at certain revs;-

http://www.kabamus.com/garage/gears.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

VW state that the maximum diesel speed for a van is 115kmh - 42kw engine 1.7d thats both 4/5 speed which converts to 71.5 mph!

the 1.6 4 speed is 103 kmh about 64mph

That's great thanks. On the brick yard site it shows all the 1.7d 4 speed ratios as being exactly the same and the same for all the 1.7d 5 speed boxes are the same ratios, which is the same ratio as the box I have from a 1.9 petrol....so it may just work out after all....
