Oops! Camshaft woes

Just prepping my AAZ engine to replace the 1V and I reckon I've scrapped my camshaft!!
I was trying to undo the camshaft bolt and I had the timing locking tool in the slot, anyway it must not have been all the way in or I dislodged it wrestling with the bolt.

The chip has now come off and I've taken the camshaft off the head. Is it repairable? or does it even matter that it's chipped?
I've had a look on Vagcat and the camshaft was fitted to AAZ's and 1Y's, so am I better off finding a replacement?

Hello,

I don't think that's worth repairing personally - better to get another cam and might as well replace the lifters at the same time.

For future reference - if you're removing the cam pulley you shouldn't rely on the cam locking tool to take the strain - you shoud use a counter holding tool. Sorry if you already knew this but it seemed like you didn't use a counter holding tool from your post.

Bad luck though - hope it's not too expensive to find a replacement

All I had was the Franklyn locking kit from Brickwerks, but the injection pump locking pin was way too big to fit anywhere on the pulley.
I think that kit must be for the older pump as there was only a 5.5mm slot/hole into which I put a 5.5mm drill bit, but that bent too.
I reckon when the belt was last changed, the fitter over torqued the bolt resulting in me having to shell more cash out!
Any ideas of cost and avaliability?
Cheers!!

Hello again,

here are a few links - they are picked at random for illustration - I can't vouch for any of the sellers!

there's another type of locking pin for the pump:

If you give these folk a ring I believe they should give you a price - there are other places, but it should give you an idea - I think they might regrind old cams but not sure.

You definitely need a counter-holding tool - here's an example - I've got one of these cheap ones and it does the job, but it's not top quality... (this is for zetec - can't find the one I got)

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/DRAPER-63397- ... 2a09913a38" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Hope it's not too pricey for you. You' need a puller or punch to get the cam pulley off too...

You can use the camshaft off the 1Y (if you're scrapping that engine), same part as on AAZ.

E D I T: If you need the workshop manual, let me know and I can scan it to PDF.

Yeah cheers for that Syncroandy, a PDF of the manual would be great! :ok
If you PM me, I'll send my email address, cheers.
BTW it's a 1V 1.6TD I'm replacing, not a 1Y so on the lookout for a AAZ or 1Y cam.

As has been said , the locking tool is for setting timing IT IS NOT for locking cam whilst undoing bolt.

BFO screwdriver strategically wedged will do be enough to wedge front pulley, its not torqued up that much 22 (cant remember if its Nm or lb ft though  ) sounds familiar.
