idle stabilizing unit

I have an 1981 Aircooled 2L van with an electronic ignition system. The van does not seem to have an idle stabilizing unit, do that sound normal?
ISUs fail from time to time.
They can be bypassed without any long term effects.
As long as your van runs OK, I would'nt worry.
