Shattered CV joint, I think!

Swapped gearbox out today and discovered that as well as a knackered 'box I have a totally obliterated NS cv joint, or the hub has had it. I will attempt to describe the problem.

Van sat on wheel. Driveshaft turns.
You can physically pull the driveshaft away from the hub area but it won't come out completely, I'm assuming because the cv joint rubber boot is preventing it from complete release.

My question is, is it likely to have smashed the hub assembly to bits or only the cv joint itself?

Hope you guys can help!

Hi
I have a couple of threads on the go atm, as Im refurbing my rears. Lots of pics there. Also in Wiki is Jed's video rear changing a wheel bearing.
Reason I say both of these things is that they show that the drive shafts do have an amount of lateral play in them, but without seeing yours its difficult to say what your specific problem might be.... CVs are relatively easy to replace, but you must be really carefull not to strip any of the 6 allen type bolts at each joint...and use new bolts and washers when you reassemble...
:ok

I understand they have lateral play but this is three to four INCHES!! I'll check out the links, thank you :)

you just watch Jeds video (easily found on youtube too 'T25 wheel bearing') when he smacks it with a hammer - it shifts quite some distance!

Yes I'm sure they do move but when the driveshaft, cv joint and hub are all connected you can't turn the driveshaft with the wheel on the ground! You can on mine.....no joint! I'll take a look and see what I can find :ok

That's what I thought. I'll get it to bits when I have time. I have so much work this week it's not gonna get touched until the weekend I don't think.

You'll need to unbolt driveshaft from gearbox end, remove axle nut and talk the stub axle into being pushed back through to the inside of the wheel. Generally if you unscrew nut until its just proud of the stub, gentle taps with a hammer on the nut (with a lump of wood over it if possible) should do it and save damaging the thread. Once out you'll find that any remaining bolts in the stub will either unscrew with ease or with help from a sharpish implement to encourage them to turn and come out.
