Engine Problem Advice

My 65k mile JX td engine has just developed a problem, loads of white smoke coming out the exhaust, worse when low speed or on tick-over. Apart from the smoke the engine seems to run smoothly, possibly a little less power. However the engine cant be run for more than a few mins as it overheats. Oil is low so probably burnt a bit getting home but not sure, stop, start, stop, start letting it cool imbetween 2 mile runs. The water seems fine ie just water but something must have happend to the cooling system as the fan stopped blowing out hot air, still blows cold air, weired.

I've limited knowledge of engines but am pretty practical and would have a go at the injectors etc but the piston rings are well out of my league, not a front of the house job.

Any thoughts from you more experienced lads would be appreciated, even if its just to confirm what the garage bill could be.

Cheers guys

Kevin

Typical symptoms of a failing head gasket. As your mileage is so low this is certainly worth changing. There are various tests that can be carried out: Cylinder leak test/Coolant pressure test etc to be sure.
