Servo T Piece

My engine started running a little rough and backfiring recently, so knowing she hadn't been serviced in some time and me being a novice i thought i'd try the basics first. I started by changing the spark plugs and ignition leads and after starting her up i realised there was a hissing coming from the left Carb when revving the engine (I have twin webers).
A brief investigation showed the servo t piece was perished with a whacking great hole in it, that explains the hissing! As a temporary fix we ripped the end off past the hole and clipped it back on. Immediate improvement, no hissing and no backfire.
By the end of the day it seemed like it was regressing again and after a quick check, sure enough the hiss was back. I thought obviously the piece has totally had it so i set about finding a replacement. I found a few online but i noticed they all looked made of solid plastic, seems odd being that it needs an airtight seal around the 3 connections, surely it needs to be rubber, but as it appeared to be the same across every site i assumed it must be rubber and just look plastic in the pic, so I ordered the one off JK.
It arrived today and sure enough it is made of solid plastic, its identical to the existing piece in every way, apart from the material its made from. Again i thought this odd due to the job it needs to do, but went ahead and fitted it anyway.
Surprise surprise its still hissing and running rough. I'm totally puzzled, everything indicates this is the right part but its made from the wrong material! Heres the part i bought:

And heres the bit off my van

I'm going to ring JK in the morning but being the impatient soul i am, i wanted to see if anyone could shed any light on this before, as every site i looked at that sells this piece appears to have the same solid plastic version , what am i missing here??
Cheers
Alex
