What do I need for this 'box?

Hi as you guys know my 1.6 diesel box has just blown itself to pieces so I'm going to buy a DK box. What do I need to make it fit? I've been told it might not be a plug and play lark. I need to know as soon as possible so I can get the necessary bits while I'm with the guy

Many thanks
Rich

Are you going from 4 to 5 spd?
If yes then, ideally, you'll need the 5 spd stick and box that sits underneath up front.

Although you can still use a 4 spd stick setup on a 5spd box but will not have the detents to guide your changes.

No I'm staying with 4 speed. According to Brickyard info site the DK is a 4 speed box and I currently have, well had, a DM box which is a 4 speed box. So what do I need apart from the bell housing and diesel input shaft?

swap over the mount and the bellhousing and the input shaft otherwise straight swap, hopefully the 1.6 is now a 1.9 or it'll be underpowered esp in 4th

Sorry mate....I got it wrong.

Or maybe cos its diesel.

(was sure I was told that the dk wasn't a direct swop for the later watercooled linkages)

Aidan is the guy who knows!!

Oh thank goodness! Thank you. It's been a 1.9 1Y since I bought it. I spoke to you on the phone regarding re gearing my gearbox a few weeks before Christmas! You advised me to run the DK box then once I'd told you I had the 1Y. Looks like the DM box agreed with you!!

How easy is it to remove the input shaft on these boxes?

Its ok, not everyone gets it right first time!!

I have a Dk code gearbox to a late 1.6td but now running it with a 1Y engine. You will need the linkage from a 1.6 or 2ltr aircool and a gearbox mount mod that will allow it to bolt up to the threaded holes. You may have to remove the ally plate that is screwed into the steel box where the gear stick fits to the linkage. The early 1,6 diesel vans where fitted with a gearbox&linkage rods very like the 1.6/2ltr aircool but changed over to linkage like fitted to petrol WBX and some with a higher mounted tunnel for the gear stick.length to the gearbox mount so it would would bolt Others have put a spacer between the gearbox and mount where its bolted to the box so it can reach the chassis bolt holes. This will be okay but you still need to add extra length to the gear shift rod by the same measured distance that is spaced between the mount and the nose of the gearbox.I discribed you may need to remove the ally plate where the gear stick fits to the linkage in the steel box if left in place it stops the DK aircool linkage getting the gears.I think this is could be due to the diffrent angles the way it needs to push against in that box between the two types of rods

I think the van used to be an air cooled although on the V5 it states 1.7 diesel which is wrong either way! The reason I think it used to be an air cooled is that everything in the water cooled department has been retrofitted, right done to the radiator which is operated by a manual fan so all that has to be updated.

This doesn't affect the operation of the gear that's now in the van so yes, in a round about way the van is a 1982 early diesel!

And yes it's the DM 4 speed :) I'll get there eventually. :ok

Thanks Camper.....glad to know that I wasn't so wrong!

the DK doesn't fit as a straight swap to later petrol watercooled.

phew!
