hi
jus wondering what parts are needed to go from ABD gearbox to DK it will be being mated to a AGG engine which is obviously using diesel engine bars ect so will i ned diesel gear box mount back linkage and gear stick or DK gear stick, rear linkage and mount or none of the above any help would be great
cheers

abd is water cooled ,dk is Aircooled
you need either a watercooled or Aircooled diesel front mount
the Aircooled mount fits straight to the gearbox, the WC mount will need re drilling to fit the box
the AC gearbox setup will need Aircooled driveshafts as vw changed the length when they went water cooled
from memory the a/c box mounts use the 'other ' mount nuts on the crossmember ( you will understand when you try to fit) so make sure these are all clean
either gearbox will need the bell housing changing to a diesel one - and the input shaft- dont forget the bell housing bolts
you only need the rear part of the gear linkage , it will need to be cut and welded to the WC gear rod
diesel and petrol gear rods are different - you will need one to match the diesel mount

right understood
i think i will stick with my ABD then as i have all the driveshafts, mounts linkage ect and get rid of the DK i think that would be less hastle.
yeah i have the bellhousing just need to get the input shaft and bolts.
so the other thing i would need to get is the diesel rear linkage and a diesel gear selector rod have i understood that right ?
but would i need a diesel 4 spd gear box mount too then ?
cheers

i presume you have the late van
if fitting the dk you just need the rear part of the linkage , the bit that connects to the box. this needs to be cut and welded to your current shift rod
the diesel mount is different to the petrol mount in either 4/5 speed & early /late boxes ( early water cooled diesel are same as Aircooled boxes) so 4 different mounts
for what ever reason vw lifted the front of the box on diesels ( clearence /oil issues whatever) and you need the diesel gear shift rod to match the mount - it has a different shape, steeper bend to compensate for the box lift.
and when vw went fully watercooled the box got slightly moved meaning different length shafts were needed and only about 5mm
the diesel input shaft has shorter end than the petrol so bottom line is the petrol can be cut down to fit

yeah i got that it is currently a 1.9 petrol water cooled ABD code gearbox 1985 van. i wanted to put a DK in as i have one sat in my garage but if it means changing all the drive shafts ect i dont think i will bother.
but i am going to be doing an agg conversion which uses the diesel engine bars so the gearbox need the diesel bell housing , starter and in put shaft.
so if i am keeping the original gear box in the van (ABD) but doing this conversion (AGG) will i need diesel 4spd gearbox mount, diesel 4spd rear linkage ? and if i do i will need the gear selector because the front of the box is lower, am i right on that ?
cheers

im not sure on the effects of the diesel set up with the petrol gearlinkage and mount and vice versa- stessing the rubber mounts? oil starvation ? clearence issues?
vw obviously had some sort of problem with the diesel engine and the petrol front mounting system.
some say its about the gearbox oil , could be engine oil or just a clearence issue
either way ideally if your going diesel set up you really need the linkage and mount so its all as designed
or you could be the guinnea pig and tell us what happens?

mmmm i see lots to think about there then because all i can get from others going from petrol to gti is that they just use the petrol gearbox mount set up it was just the linkage i wasnt it of sure of but that has given me a bit of food for thought , i think i better look into it futher and ask a few more people about it who have done it.
