Hi Guys,

I am not sure what gearbox I have in my camper as an engine conversion took place prior to me owning it. It is a 4 speed though and the original documentation is says DW with original engine DG so probably that one?

Anyway I noticed it was becoming hard to change gear, with a very low biting point so I checked the brake / clutch fluid and it was very low, topped up and same happened over a few journeys. This problem has now got worse to the point where it is loosing a lot per trip so it's now off the road.

I had a nosey underneath and clutch fluid was running / dripping off the gearbox. I checked the bleed nipple hoping that had just come lose but the top half of the piston thing (clutch slave cylinder??) is dry and the fluid seems to be coming out from the rubber gaiter on the lower piston part.

Can anyone advise on this job? Is the leaking piston fixable?
Anyone tell me the technical name for this piston next to the gearbox that disengages the clutch? Clutch Slave Cylinder?
Can this be replaced with gearbox etc in situ?
Any recommended places to source one?

I have found a few on fleabay. Ranging from £20 up to Brickwerks one for £50. Obviously the later is more OEM standard but would the cheap one be that bad?

Also on a side note, when I was struggling to get the van into my drive I was pretty brutal forcing the gears in, bad I know. I swear I also heard something metal drop when I was in the garage and stalled it. But it now grinds going into 3rd if I am not slow and the gear stick feels less tight going into gears. Could this just be the linkage bushes or think this will be remedied when the slave cylinder is replaced and bled?

Right...general rule of thumb= buy cheap, buy twice.

Brickwerks don't sell anything he wouldn't fit to a customers van, and he has tested everything before he sells it (not really wanting to replace parts under warrenty!!)

The choice is yours, and is sometimes dictated by available ££ in the wallet. I have, on occassion, been forced to buy cheaper just to keep it on the road. I have been fortunate to date. I know that brake pads and bearings can be chocolate, but haven't heard anything about bad cylinders.

bought loads from gsf never had a problem with them,usually ate german oem.

Would partly agree on the buy cheap, fit twice theory but I too have fitted less expensive parts with no problem. No disrespect intended but I wouldn't be paying £50 for a slave cylinder. Each to their own on that - I just wouldn't. When it comes to anything with a load on it like bearings or CV joints, you can come unstuck buying cheap. Likewise cheap brake parts can be risky.

GSF one is like £32 trade price and is a fine copy of the original one with the reinforced piston end rather than the rubbish one that VW used for ages with the long plastic end which is actually wrong imho
