America road trip

Over Christmas, my dad and I got talking about a shared dream - doing the Route 66 across America.

He wanted to do it in an open top Mustang or similar but I reckon you couldn't beat doing it in a Vanagon - mixing a bit of camping and some really seedy motels.

I guess you could hire one out there but surely it would make more sense to buy one, ship it back and then sell it - hopefully it would be a good rust free one.

Anyone ever done it?

I did the dream some years ago. Unfortunately I found Route 66 far from the romantic fantasy and in a sorry state of repair as most resources are spent on the interstate roads. I reckon maybe a 4x4 would be better for this route rather than a convertible. Also air conditioning may well be needed depending upon what time of year you intend to go and how far west. There are plenty of other roads to travel through national parks and reservations as an alternative. You will find it amazing. Enjoy

Yep, we did too - not 66 itself, but coast-to-coast.

It doesn't even really exist any more, does it?

Far better to just pick where you want to go and put the route together yourself, I reckons. Don't forget http://www.thesamba.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; - they'll be able to offer some suggestions.

'course, you COULD just put your van in a container... We've met some Canadians touring Europe in their Canadian-registered Merc Sprinter van conversion - and Brad & Sheena of http://www.drivenachodrive.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; are planning on taking their T25 around the world.

(FWIW, we've no plans in that direction. Yet. :rofl )
