Ohhh I give up!!! 2.1 DJ nonstarter.

My third thread on this bl00dy thing, but need new ideas!!
Brief history.......
Bought a caravelle off ebay, poor starter & poor runner.
Drove it home.
POwner had starting issues, spent £3K at different garages. Fitted a gold recon motor.
Had a look at engine, good compression, no stabilizer unit, (connectors joined together) Dizzy vacume pipes connected the wrong way round.
That sorted, non starter.
Checked injectors....Injecting.
Thought it must be something electrical.
Have now checked all wiring on the coil/Hall unit/Dizzy & all wiring seems good. Fitted new plugs.
Have now switched Coil, Hall, Dizzy, leads & fuel regulator from my good working other 2.1dj Doka. Doka started fine with all parts switched. This caravelle still nonstarter!!
What can it be???
I don't think its electrical/ignition anymore. Its getting fuel. It has started (before I started fixing it

). Turns over fine but doesn't even try to start.
What can it be???
It as if the timing/spark is happening at the wrong time. Is it possible for dizzy shaft to be in wrong?
Any & all ideas welcome. What am I missing??

yes disi drive shaft can be fitted wrong way around making every thing 180' out simple enough to check, didn't you note which way the leads were when you started ?
Notice that you haven't swapped over afm or ecu either, afm failure (or disconnected) will usually start but won't rev, ecu swap is scarey as you don't want to fry a good one but other than sending it away and paying a lot of money there's no way to check it otherwise, but that would be where I'd be going if afm checks out ok
SyncroAndy has pdf'd the UK DJ VW manual, pm him for a copy, it'll be going in the downloads soon

Yeah sorry, I've done so much I forgot to say.....
Switched Airbox for known good one.
& have switched ECU, also known good.
No difference.
It did start, couple weeks back, reved, advanced & stuff but wasn't really right. When cold & touching accelarator it would stall.
Now won't even do that.
Going back to dizzy, I've just lined up rotor with notch on the rim on one, but it is alot more rotated than on the doka, should they all roughly be the same?

Can it be something real simple that I'm not seeing??
When it did run, I thought timing was very retarded, could I just try dizzy in different positions? Won't do any harm will it?

Okay, given up on the ignition side, Tested & swapped everything I can think off. I really can't see anything wrong.
So, I'm pretty sure its getting a spark & at the right time. So I'm going back to fuel.
Weeks ago I tested that there was petrol but couldn't view injector spray. Mrs was about today so I removed one side of injectors & got her to crank it over. Sure enough they squirted petrol but not in nice cone spray but just two jets of petrol. Shot across van & hit window.
Is this enough to stop it starting? Petrol not a vapour?
If so, where is best place to get a set or get a set overhauled?

Hang on in there!!

I sent mine to a place in Hull for cleaning and testing, £75, 24 hour turnaround, they were better when returned but tbh weren't bad when sent out to be done but I didn't want to fit a set that were worse than my old ones, which were okish, but I was getting a hesitant idle which the replacement injectors have cured
I'd pm syncroandy just in case he still has one of the sets of new injectors that we got from draco a few years ago, I've still got mine in a safe place to go on a rebuilt engine when SimonTMT gets it done

Cheers for replies chaps. Do we think that solid jets of petrol is enough to stop starting though?
There is a kind of sense to this if so. Going by PO receipts, he had a poor runner/starter, over 12mths he had new tank/pump/filter fitted (any amount of gunk stirred up). Still poor starter. He then had a new Gold recon fitted but the injectors look old & two were fitted without seals.

solid jet of fuel at 3 bar will flood the plugs I think

No, not yet!
I'm thinking injectors are looking likely, well, it gives me something to cling to!!
Refurbs look like £22 each. NOS are £160 each.

Check the fuel pressure valve. If that's doesn't work will you not get high pressure to spray.
If you search on my profile will you find a link to download Digijet manual.

I did switch fuel regulator off my working pick-up. Pick-up still works fine.
Didn't check pressure as I haven't got gauge, guess I could make one out of some old boiler parts I've got & some fuel hosing & clips.

Injectors should spray a fine mist, not squirt a stream of fuel (same for petrol or derv) so I'd go for that as the root cause. It sounds like flooding, so the injectors need a recon if they are full of crud, but the filter should have caught all of that. Has it got Saturn V mileage?
I take it that you have seen good fat blue sparks on a plug when cranking with one unscrewed on a lead? (feeble yellow sparks do not count!)
Has the timing been checked with a strobe lamp? As long as it's around 5 degrees it'll start if all else is OK.
Could be worse Karl - I've got to bin the buggered SA motronic and go aftermarket. Scary stuff!
