ok , so first things first, ive read the wiki , infact i have it book marked , i have printed off the relevant vag manual , and ive been having a tinker today.

symptoms are , starts and idle fine when cold , if a little high imho at 1100 rpm, soon drops and settles to a nice 800 ish rpms.

now ive started to use the van daily again after a layup of around 4 months.
before then it was fine and only had the occasional kangaroo, which i lived with as a quirk .

so the problem i now have is that, although it starts and idles fone when cold, after a run and the engine is upto temp, when you pull up to a junction the idle drops to around 200/300 and then stalls or just plain stalls coming up to a junction. it will always re start first time. interestingly today on the way to a job interview , it decided that it wanted to mis, this also culminate with a poor idle of around 400 rpms . its also stunk of fuel .

so im thinking poss coil ? i have the blue unit fitted . i have also noticed that when some kind sole has taken out the engine to paint it and presumably do some other work , they have removed all the metal retaining clips that go onto the two pin plugs for the injectors, temp sender etc etc . does anyone know where to get some or does anyone have some on an old loom?

the van always revs fine and is great under WOT conditions, fuel consumption appears to be around 24-28 mpg on mixed driving. so its just this damm stalling .

i assume the idle valve is the same as on mk2 golfs if so ill try to get a good one and swap it out. or could it be the hall sender ? the little white matchbox sized unit ? can i bypass and connect the two wires togther without any adverse affects ?

suggestions and thoughts please ..

ta jim

forgot to add if i remove the afm plug then it stalls , so in my mind it works.
if i take off the idle stabalisation plug there is a very small difference in revs .
if i remove the blue temp sender plug the van goes into a fast idle .

leads and plugs have been replaced less than a 1000 miles ago , as i didnt like the old tired look of the leads and , plugs were of an unknown age.
its had fresh oil and a new filter ..

and our daughter has named it daisy. ( not that that will help  )

i had a similar problem with over fueling, im not sure wether it was the vaccum pipes or the temp2 sender (blue) as i changed these at the same time, i also cleaned every electrical conection twice :roll:new ht leads, airfilter, swaped afm and back, gave it a blast of carb cleaner, plugs.

after changing the temp2 i disconnected the battery for an hour and all was then fine :ok

hmm, ill take a look at the temp sender 2, although it seems very new and shiney.. no harm in swapping in another one. ill get my multi meter out and check whats going on

ah the white looking thing , i had unplugged it and joined the two wires together , think ill do it again go for a drive and see whats happens.

i guess its a case of eliminating things as i go.

that said its the only thing i can fault the van on , bar the ride height. it was lowered and the previous owner ( i think ) put it back ro stock .. i swear there is a good 2 foot from floor to top of the arch .
