The 600 belt that your looking at may be too short, and if fitted will be to tight and damage the bearings. Fit the right size belt and then adjust it correctly and you wont have any problems. I`ll try to have a look in the Bentley later and find the correct sizes.

I've checked vw heritage and it states 10x643 (which I fitted successfully to my jx) I got mine from gsf though and 10x600 for alternator.
Always fit the same size as you remove if they're slipping they're worn, belts can be adjusted on the waterpump by removing or adding the shims (washers) on the two halves of the pulley (it splits in two once the 3 bolts are removed)
Hope this helps
:ok

I changed all my belts inc timing belt (dont forget the tensioner as these fail) together. Timing belt should turn no more than 90 degrees at its loosest point. I changed mine whilst I had the rear valance removed for more access and it was rotten.
I have an 86 jx too that I've been working on for 4 yrs. It still looks a mess, roll on summer!

It wasn`t a bad job to do, easier if you remove exhaust and heat shield (if yours still has one, mine was rotten and held up with wire)
The only problem I had is the 4 Allen bolts that hold the crankshaft pulley on were rounded off, I removed the whole pulley and timing gear (I wouldn`t suggest doing it this way as it was very hard to replace at the correct place).

Keep us posted with your progress and share pictures, we`ve all either been there and don it or still going through the same progress. Have you discovered where Vw have hidden the rust???
