14" 16" driveshafts

Its cropped up again today and despite some good effort from other syncronaughts I am still not confident I know the answer...can someone please give me a definitive explanation of 1. The differences between 14" and 16" front and rear driveshafts with / without lock. and 2. Which ones are interchangeable and 3. How this effects the size of joint. (90 & 98mm). Cheers

a 16" with a front locker has a unique driveshaft assembly because the outer CV is different but I cant find anything on ETKA about the actual shaft itself. The same goes for the rear end!
This means that you can interchange 16" shafts with 14" and visa versa EXCEPT where a front 16" locker is involved. The rear end is different. A 14" fits on a 14" and a 16" fits on a 16"
I think!

the larger 16" shaft arangement also have the larger output flanges on the box and diff.
just to add.
14" have 90mm output flanges f and r. 90mm cv joints inner and outer @ rear and @ inner front. rear stub axle matches the 90mm rear cv and front outer cv joint to match 90mm front shaft assembly.
16" rear shafts are 98mm assemblies wont inter change. front "non front diff lock models" are same as 14" front with diff locker are 98mm with larger outer cv joints and thicker shafts.

8mm bigger methinks. Are the actual shafts different? ETKA doesnt list them and is a little confusing

ok I can follow what the factory says and makes sense following the 16" locker is a beefier bit of kit train of thought BUT vans get worked on , shafts and diffs swapped etc. 16" locking shafts are harder to find. So, i assume over the years some 16"vans (whether front lock or not) have resorted to using the more common 14/16nl shafts. So what then dictates the size / choice of outer joint on these shafts? and is the front inner joint size dictated by the flange on the diff (some 16" vans will have diffs from 14" vans) and not by the driveshaft?

I have never had a 16" drive shaft in one hand and a 14" in the other so I cant say for definite but I think the shafts are the same, its just the CV joints that are different. Can someone clarify that ?

that is my understanding too. i think paul had a complete 16inch shaft may be worth giving him a call for conformation.

16 front shaft [locking] is thicker than 16 non locking or 14.

So are we correct in saying that all front shafts are the same except for 16" locker shafts?
Are we correct in thinking that all rear shafts are the same?

Ok so then theres a specific front outer cv for the beefy 16 locking shaft. So is there a specific cv for the non locking 16 shaft and another for the 14" shaft or are these the same. ? Also whats the difference between the cv's ? - do they all have the same size nut on the end?

rears are thicker and from what i've read slightly longer. front non locking 16" cvj same as 14"

The front outer CV on a 16" locker is a bigger part and is unique to the 16" locker. The 14" and non locker 16" CV are the same.
Rear CV joints are easier. A 14" CV fits 14" vehicles and 16" CV's fit 16" vehicles ..... and thats it!!

I seem to remember that the 16" rear shaft is about 5 mm shorter than the 14" one

That could well be the case as the 108mm diameter (16") cv's are significantly taller face-to-face than the 100mm (14") ones. MG got into all sorts of bother with Limey's shaftage, you'd have to trawl t'samba for the write-up.
