Hi,
Van starts fine when cold. But after a bit of a run and it's been turned off for a while it'll start ok, but about 100m down the road it'll lose power and stall.
It won't start again for ages. It turns over ok but just won't catch. Once started it zips of as if nothing ever happened !
Due to go for a tour down west coast of ireland on monday for 3 weeks, please help !
Thanks
Mark

How do you try and start it....
full throttle and crank?
pumping the throttle and cranking?
everything including prayer and curses?

Yes could be a pump and it can be checked too.
take off the outlet pipe from the pump to the carb (take the carb end off)
point it into a container and turn it over...you should get some quite powerfull spurts of petrol....be carefull

Start no probs at all when cold tho.

Back the chokes off as they flood.
Auto chokes are only bi metal strips, they are constantly fed with electric and this opens the choke. once you stop, the choke heating element cools, the bimetal strip brings the choke back on.
Warm engine and choke = non start, or flooding.
Like mentioned up there either jump in and hold your foot flat to the floor or maybe try to back the chokes off a little.

fuel filter close to pump?
there should only be one fuel filter, next to the outlet of the tank, under the sill, none in the engine bay, the pump cant cope with two when it get weaker with age........

Just got one on the way to the pump.
The fuel line below the bus looks ot have been joined up where a filter might have been before

Sorry to hijack the thread but ive had real trouble starting when hot too.
I have a fuel filter under the van where the fuel line leaves the tank and another in the engine bay. Could this be the reason???

there should only be one filter.....
hot starting wont be helped by too many filters, the pump will struggle to suck through two filters, but i doubt this is the total cause of your problem, it more likely the carb and choke and how you use the throttle....
from cold you should fully depress the throttle pedal to "set" the choke then let go of the pedal when cranking, from hot you maybe better keeping your foot down when cranking......

Could my electro cut-off valve be faulty when hot ?
Cause I get about 100m down the road, probably using the fuel already in the carb then i stop.
What you's think ?
Thanks

ummmm, did i aready ask what year, or more importantly, what cooling system we are talking about?
sounds like a thermal switch issue

Other things you might consider is no venting or blocked venting at the tank. Had that happen on many Aircooled VWs - stops the flow of fuel after a bit. Mind you in this weather, vapour-lock is possible too.
