I've got a very noisy rummbling sound coming from the right front wheel but only on a left hand turn.

It's on the 16" DOKA with front diff locks....A few Observations:

1) Only happens on a left hand bend/turn
2) Stops when I put the clutch in so it's free wheeling ( No drive on the wheel)
3) Seems to be much louder and almost grinding sound on some occasions, actually to the point of worrying.
4) Seems to be worse when under load accelaerating, any gear any speed.
5) Apparant when decelarating on a left hand but not as bad usually.
6) Wheel bearing appears fine (also confirmed by local garage)
7) No radial play in the CV joint and plenty of grease, I've pulled back the boot and checked also renewed some grease.
8 ) Nothing appears untoward when jacked up and spinning the wheel.

I've heard of CV joints going, the left one failed with a bang!, but that had no grease at all!

Any thoughts anyone? Can a CV joint fail quickly or is it a progresive thing which is what I thought, hence this post.

Sounds like cv worn. Generally the wear progresses slowly until failure occurs. However if torque is put through them whilst on lock they can fail even though they didn't seem too bad.

Mechanics stethoscope, jack all 4 wheels and run up to speed should show where the fault is.

Turned out to be a front outer nearside CV; only noisy/clunking when turning hard right. In fact the front drive shaft simply stopped turning when on full lock; the wheel was turning, the drive shaft was stationary.

My last nasty syncro noise (low-speed clack on hard right turn under power only) turned out to be the off side REAR inner CV. I was convinced that it would be a front outer, but Aidan set me right as he'd had the same symptoms recently.

P.S. unless you've got water damage to a front wheel bearing...may not be slack but would be noisy due to slight track pitting/fretting. If the grease has gone reddish brown, it's on the way out. Had this on front bearings on various 2wd vehicles, adjusted correctly but still noisy. New brg sorts it every time.

Many Thanks for the posts, with more driving around with clutch in/out and freewheeling and with this quote in mind I think I'll change the offside REAR wheel bearing, the nearside has just been done.

I'ts easy to get fixated on your own belief of what is wrong, but after some "alternative" thinking I'm wondering if the noise is actually coming from the back NOT the front.

There seems a fair bit of play in the rear wheel, although I am always amazed how much play even a new bearing has.

I have the same problem with my 16" at the mo. (see post on here) but cannot locate where from. Not sure if its the cv's or not. Have come to think that after 120,000 miles they all might want to be replaced!!?? But after seeing the price of the front outer cv.....perhaps not. Bus man wants 209 euro for one!!!
The joys of owning a Syncro!!!!!!!!!! Syncro Services were selling these but cant find them on their web site. Anybody any ideas on this?
