Maybe this is a well known question, maybe the Germans had off days/years?I own a '85 hightop and have just replaced the o/s sills n "B" post lower n out riggers. 26 years new and I reckon this is not bad (having owned Fords). The rust that is left is pretty good quality still!! There must be some T25's that were finished on a Friday!!

Dont think so, different converters caused differing problems ,and over the years some iffy repairs have caused more problems, just as using for leisure then laying up and festering then a bit more use etc and often layed up over winter, all things that help the rust....
all said they are really quite well built ,its just learning to understand them..

I thought that 86 onwards vans had better rust treatments?

Yes later vans used zinc coated steel for the doors but it was only coated on the inner facing side. VW did have a service program for retreating the underbody and cavity wax but not many people had it done.

My van's been zebarted (sp?) by VW but I don't know if that was standard in 1990 or an optional extra
