Whats the cheapest way to switch on a webasto?

Hi,

I dont know if anyone knows about webasto water heaters that hook into your engine water system to pre-heat the engine. Anyway, i have one like this (i think):

At the moment its connected to the eberspacher timer controller that comes with the westfalia florida like this:

Anyway, i would like to change the controller to be the simplest on/off switch i can find.

Basically i would like a small switch if possible that i can wire up in the dash (and later connect it to a GSM controlled switch).

Does anyone have any ideas of the simplest cheapest switch out there that i can use?

Thanks,

Ringo

I have bench tested one of those before and got round the timer, If you get stuck without a reply from someone with a manual give us a bell. I am not sure the temperature function on the timer would be of use on that heater though.

+12V to pin 3 on X12 plug should do it, (page 28 of the manual) + 5A fuse. Any small switch will do.

Would I be correct in thinking the red wire to the yellow wire behind the timer switched? and also the black/red wire that would be the temperature setting would be no use on this kind of heater?

Thanks for the reply guys. I need to find out the model number for the webasto and get the manual for it. But thats great info ta i will try that. For some reason the old owner fitted this instead of an air heater when the original eber broke and used the old timer.

I could use the timer but I really want to keep things simple. Also, knowing this information will let me use a simple Gsm operated switch so I can turn it on / off from my phone too.

Of course, I need to work out how to do that for my D2LC - I think that's done by putting 12v on the trigger wire that goes to the controller?

Thanks again.

Having a coolant heater isnt to be sniffed at mate, in fact I bought one to go in the westy a while back but didnt get round to fitting one due to the magnetic pump having a fault. I got it from ebay and when the seller said I must have burnt out the pump by putting resistance on it, kind of saved the day because I had done a little research about them before hand and knew it would be impossible and he had to come and pick it up and give me my money back

Anyway.. if you are ever doing any serious winter camping in your van at say -10 when diesel starts to go abit funny (i know they do winter mix and this helps loads) the webasto will give your engine a good warm up before hand giving you a good chance of it starting. I dont know if an LT has an auxiliary matrix fan set up (like the ones on a T3 under the rear seats) but your coolant heater would get the van engine up to temperature then kick the Aux heater in and that is what would heat the van. Its not as efficient as a hot air heater but you are getting alot more from it, you can also run hot water from it using a cylinder set up but thats a whole different story. Most of the Scandinavian vans have a webasto and a rear heater matrix, even my Swedish Syncro Doka has this as it must help in the extreme cold and you usually find they are also fitted with a mains plug in the passenger foot well to have a mains powered fan heater to kick in when plugged into the mains also as well as a mains powered heating coil fitted to the engine block. We have been talking about an Arctic Northern lights trip for years and when we do go we will be fitting a Webasto for sure, its just at the moment my charge cooler and snorkel will be taking up the room behind the rear lights where they normally go so I might have to pop one in a none conventional place.

An Ideal set up for extreme temperatures in the winter would be a D2 or newer model, and a coolant heater because if one let you down at least you would have the other so you dont freeze to death plus while they are both working you can benefit from the two and what they offer.

I don't think it has the aux heater. I've never actually had it running tbh. However, at some point it replaced the eber so maybe it does have someway of heating the cab up.

The previous owner said it didn't work and when I tried it there was a fuel leak. So I'll get round to fixing that and see if it's any good.

We plan to do a couple of weeks ski trip in a few years so it will come in handy then. Plus, while it's fitted I can use it as a backup and to make starting easier.

Thanks dudes,

Ringo

Just fixed the fuel leak and just had it running for ten minutes. It works!!!!

It switches on the dash fan when it gets up to temp so i should have a clear windscreen as well as easy starting!

One issue is its loud. It makes a high pitch noise which i suspect is the water pump - never heard a diesel heater sound like that before.
It has a inlet and outlet silencer fitted... My neighbours are going to like me even less when i get this wired up to a remote....

Im guessing when i start the engine with it running it will cut out? Does anyone know? Do i have to switch it off?

Cheers,

Ringo
