HELLO TO ONE AND ALL.
have just bought my first vw t25 van which is a 1980 1600 ct Aircooled, (i salvaged it from being cut up for spares).i have spent last 4 months prep it up for its mot and have come across a problem in which none of my vw friends can help me with. here it goes.
it has a very noisy exhaust sounds like it is blowing (this was noted on the mot failure sheet) we have renewed various clamps etc, as thought this would cure it. it hasnt and if you put your hand over the exhaust pipe when the engine is running there isnt much exhaust pressure as you can keep hand on it. also while doing this you cant see any exhaust gas leaking from anywhere on the exhaust pipe work, so am realy puzzled where ir is blowing from.

sealing the CT exhaust can be a right old pain if you fire the engine up 1st thing in the morning you normally get a fair amount of moisture in the exhaust fumes (all cars do this!)... it's worth doing this then covering the tailpipe and looking for where the moist exhaust fumes are coming from.

have you had the clamps apart? there is a graphite/steel ring that the clamps squash to seal the joint - if these are missing/damaged then you'll need to replace them

Are you sure its not one of the cylinder heads leaking? I have a 1600 CT in the workshop doing exactly the same. Im going to retorque the heads up. Seeen and heard a 2000 CU doing the same thing too...

thanks for replies, have tried and moisture is comming out of the tail pipe so will try again in the morning and do as you said. also if the exhaust system was workinh ok would you still be able to hold your hand over the tail pipe or would the pressure be too much.

am not that much of a mechanic think that be too advanced for me could this work be done at a standard garage and any ideas how long it would take to do

It not a big job tbh...where abouts are you?

if you cant see it then maybe heat exchangers perished and its all leaking/blowing out there.

A fellow CT sufferer

No really, better than a beetle engine, and probably the cheapest to run and repair of the T25 motors.

The best way to get to know your motor, is to drop it , a good clean and inspect, sort the heat exchangers and flexies.

Good on you John, keep forgetting how completely simple the 16 air is to drop out, not really worth the bother of struggling in tightish spaces is it..
