We are going to a wedding in Penarth,South Wales next May. Thinking of taking a week to explore further
Any suggestions on routes, sights, pubs, coastal regions, rural areas, wild camping spots, campsites?

In my pre-camper days we visited the Brecon beacons and it was beautiful. Also enjoyed the museum in Brecon that houses all the victoria crosses won in the battle of roukes drift. Simply superb if you are interested in that kind of thing!

I second the Brecons, good site in Llangattock (over the bridge from Crickhowell). Lots of wildcmaping spots. urm...there is one on sugarloaf, a few above Llangattock and a few near the Talybont reservoir

If you carry on west from Penarth you'll arrive at Swansea and the Gower - an area of Natural Outstanding Beauty.
I would recommend camping at the award winning Three Cliffs Bay campsite which was voted Best View from a Campsite in the World by the Independent. The entire Gower coastline from Langland Bay to Oxwich, Port Eynon, Rhossili, Llangennith, Llanmadoc etc. is easily accessible from there.
If you wish to travel further west I would suggest heading to St David’s. It’s a beautiful drive taking in places such as Solva, and there’s plenty to do and see in St David’s itself. Another great campsite in that area is Lleithyr Farm campsite.

Pembrokeshire if it's not too far off route - Barafundle Bay, Broadhaven Beach, Stackpole....lovely locations, fabulous beaches. I haven't camped there but regularly stay in the Stackpole region.

I recommend that you go to mid-Wales. Start with the campsite at these Long/Lat coords:

52.363303,-3.728698

This is on the Mountain road from Devil's Bridge (or Pontrhydygroes) to Rhayader (the campsite is east of the ruins of the old Cwmystwyth lead mine). It'll take you to the heart of the Cambrian Mountains, and the Welsh Lake District of the Elan Valley. If you follow the road east from the camp site, you'll also find the odd spot that you can wild camp at. Look up the site on Google Earth, you won't be disappointed.

Pembrokeshire, especially St Davids, is lovely. Nice little "city", with just enough pubs and a few shops/galleries etc. The cathedral is awesome!
Caerfai Bay caravan park is just perfect and has access to the most beautiful coastal walks.

excellent site just next to st davids is Porthclais farm. Really quiet little inlet harbour next to it for a swim/kyak/crabbing/chilling

Wow...what a lovely picture of Porthclais.....I have only seen it with the tide out

The roads? Not too steep at all. I travel the Cwmystwyth - Rhayadar route around once every month (sometimes twice a month), save in the winter in a very cold spell 'cos the road isn't gritted.

Nice! Really nice ! How steep are those roads?

A visit to Gigrin Red Kite centre is a must, we found this accidentally on our trip last year.
Coming back from Orkneys we had a few days of our holiday left so drove down through Wales we were actually on our way home on the last day and driving through Rhayader and saw signs for the centre. Went in but they had shut up for the day. They had a very basic campsite so we stayed for the night (after nagging the other half that one more day would be ok) to see the kites the next day and i have to say it completed our holiday for me

Even if you're not a birdwatcher or even agreat lover of birds to see sooooo many of these beautifully majestic birds swooping and diving and performing the most amazing aeronautical displays just a few feet in front of us was amazing. Combine it with a day trip to Elan Valley Reservoir to make it a great day
