With this being my 1st camper I'm a little clueless to the whole fridge operation thing.

The van is parked at home on a hill so I haven't had a chance to see if it works yet.

12V wise I had supple issues which I ironed out today, unfortunately all the relay checking with starting stopping the engine has flattened my battery

I'll jump start him tomorrow and cruise for an hour or so trying to run the fridge on 12 V

If the fridge is working okay on 12V should I see a significant drop in temp from ambient in approx 1 hour ?

I have a wee min/max digital thermometer which I'll sit in the fridge.

When I do get the chance to check out the gas side of things, if I have succesfully lit the gas should I be able to see/hear the gas burning ?

Some previous owner/tosser has attempted to light the fridge with a match by sticking it in the peep hole not too much damage done, only a bit of melted plastic on the front grill.

Again, if the fridge is running on gas and cooling okay should I see a significant drop in temp in 1 hour from ambient ?

I had the fridge out today, sat it upside down for 7 hours and cleaned it, the igniter works fine as I tested it when removed.

you should see a temp difference with a thermometer inside on both 12v and gas after an hour, not much of one in the ambient temp forcat this week tho, and without the themometer i doubt you notice it, maybe the ice try will have a little "rhine" on it
you'll need to be level for the gas to work, but 12v is not botheed about levelness.....

I thought the levelness was important whatever the energy source is to provide heat and drive the coolant round.

not as i understand it.......... although i maybe wrong.........

Levelness always has a bearing on how well the refridgerant refridgerates but as someone pointed out to me, when on gas the levelness is much more important as the flame may not be in line with the bottom of the pipework any more.

For example on the drive mentioned above 12v may cool it a little but not anywhere near as much as on level ground. Gas may not work at all.

I'm having the van serviced and the fuel tank leak checked out at Syncronutz over the next few days so the van will be away for a day or two.

And Mocki's right about the ambient temps being a bugger today, 9.00 AM and it's swelterrin' up here already

When i removed the interior out of my T25 Devon for general repairs.The electrolux two way 12v /gas was tested this is how i found it performed.I connected it to a fully charged 12 volt vehicle battery whilst being charged. After about one hour i noticed the aluminium in the cooled tray was cold on leaving it for five hours it was really cold but i no frost.I then tried it on gas i set the temp control to max and lighted it with the spark press button.A small blue flame from its pilot light could be clearly seen under the fridge to the left hand side.I left it on for 24 hours the fridge compartment was kept cooled but not exeptional .Reinstalled it back in the van and wired it up with a relay so it would only come on with the vehicle ignition.

Are those small 12volt ones showing up in discount stores any good - not the tiny ones that just hold a carton of milk but the slightly bigger ones. How long would the battery sustain it?

They're different. Work on thermoelectric 'Peltier' effect. I'd guess they'd draw somewhere between 4 - 8 Amps, so would kill a battery quite quickly.
