Thanks Mr Goodie but does that mean that I only have three settings per week?

No, in a word !
From the Webasto equivalent (exactly the same)

"The comfort and combi digital timer enables you to preset the start of the heater
operation up to 7 days in advance.
It is possible to program 3 different starting times, only one of which can be
activated at any one time and one event (desired programmed event must be
initiated each time required)."

So you can only program one event - once that has been actioned you have to programme it for the next one. Useless, eh?

So is it not possible to set it to switch on at 6.45 am and 4.20Pm Monday to Friday?

Not that I know of! 7 day timer is a bit of a misnomer, it should be called a once in 7 days timer.
The idea is that programme in your switch on times in the 3 memory positions, then after that you call up the next required pre-programmed event after your first one has finished.
We are used to far more sophistication with timers since these were designed.

Pretty poor effort on Eberspacher's behalf.

Didn't you put up info on switching via remote control?

Thank you.

That was in this thread. I've lost the original file so that is the only record now.

There are now phone actuated relays available on Ebay from China that are cheap.

Hi

I'm just looking into this (time of year and all that) and the link above is broken. Do you still have this info?

What I would like is the ability to genuinely programme my Eberspacher D2 Airtronic to come on every morning on workdays and when I want when camping in the cold.

Or, less desirable, the ability to turn it on from inside the house. A couple of questions if you don't mind?

1. How would I go about wiring up a phone relay to my D2 that has the 7 day timer? Or via another remote control. (Again links from my searches seem broken)

2. Is it possible to replace the timer with something like this: http://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_odkw= ... r&_sacat=0 (obviously without the diagnostics)? Or another timer?

Cheers

Updated with resurrected pics.
My posting was supposed to have been put in the wiki but didn't make it for some reason.
This was the post less the pics and links:

Elvis - I'll do the remote switching here then others can see what to do.

How to use a remote control to switch on your Webasto/Eberspacher.

For this you need your timer! plus a RF Wireless Electric Garage Gate Door Remote Control available from Ebay at a price of £3.79 from China (as at Oct 2010)
Like these.

Start to disassemble the timer control. It should be self evident how they come apart - usually a couple of screws and clips.
Using the last of the three timers shewn above (the Eberspacher combitimer is exactly the same, or it could just carry the Hella markings)

Image
Twist and remove the bulb.

Image
Separate the two halves by depressing the lugs.
Slide out the metal retaining clips under which are hidden four more lugs that retain the module inside the casing.
The instant heat button is loose so make sure you are ready for it to drop on the floor! The variable heat knob is also loose at this point.
Undo the two screws that hold the lcd module to the rest of the unit

Image
Separate the three pieces - they are held together now by the multi - pin connector, and lift away the button strip.
On this timer the instant heat button acts on two contacts - some are on just one. What we need is a point away from the contact areas where we can solder two fine wires that are going to lead to the remote control relay.(In this timer at the points indicated) Ensure that they enter from the back as it enables easier exiting from the rear of the timer.

Image

That is all that needs to be done with the timer - it will differ on the various models as to where the contacts are - just ensure that you keep away from the contact pads when you make the connections.

Image

Reassemble the unit feeding the two wires through the rear of the housing ensuring that the heat control is in the correct position as regards it's limit and the marking on the face of the unit and the heat button is the right way up. Replace the bulb.
The remote unit has three sets of terminals - 12v + &-, relay1 and relay2. Connect up the 12v supply and the two wires from the timer will go to one of the relay pairs. (they each relate to buttons A & B on the remote control) There are no polarity worries on the two wires from the timer - they just make a connection simulating the pressing of the instant heat button.
Connect the timer back up to the heater and test. The remotes have a range up to 20 metres according to their specs but 15m seems OK then starts to tail off. Just press and hold the remote button for a couple of seconds and then release to actuate the firing up or down of the heater.
If you want a greater range you will have to go to switching by mobile phone.

To do this you will need to construct a Velleman Mobile phone operated switch - part no: Velleman type MK160 this is available from several sources such as http://www.rapidonline.com/Educational-" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; ... /74248/kw/ (around £7) or http://www.electronicprojectsonline.co" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;. ... L-MK160and (around £10) and have a mobile phone that lights up when it is rung as the switch works by sensing the light given off by the phone. It is a fiddly construction but not that difficult.
Image

These need to be mounted in a light tight enclosure and the relay connected to the two wires from the timer. The relay remains actuated whilst the phone is being rung and is lit up.

Shame about the pictures....!!

Thanks for this - really informative and simple to follow. Think I'll give it a go.

Do you know if there is an alternative (cheapish) timer that could be used - I would prefer the programmability if at all possible. That said, the remote is an excellent option.

Thanks as ever for your help Oldie. :ok

I have never bothered about searching out a more sophisticated timer - doubtlessly there will be something out there manufactured by our Chinese cousins. You only require it to switch the on/off signal which you could do with the method that I detailed but you do need a non-latching relay. You need a momentary contact to simulate pressing the call for heat/switch off heat button. Older heaters need a latching relay.
I have just had a quick look on fleabay - there doesn't seem to be anything obvious to use without very complicated setting up. I don't fancy trying to programme one like this http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/12V-Relay-Cyc ... 3f28c0e7f4. It may work but I reckon it would be a real pig to work out! (I notice that there is no back up battery so don't know if you would lose the settings with a power calamity)

Thanks again for taking the time!

Think I'll stick with the remote control idea.
