Chargecooler air intake questions

Im getting myself a chargecooler (barrel type) which will sit in the place the jx air filter is. So I will need a new air filter as I don't want to move the snorkel to the other side.
I'm liking the K&N Apollo, now it might be a stupid question but can they be mounted laying on its side? As I was thinking of putting it behind the rear light and attaching it to the snorkel. I presume the Apollo is watertight?
Does anyone have any experience of fitting one, and is it suited to a syncro?

yes, yes and yes. appollo will suit. v-lux has one and i was happy to use one untill i decided to go "e" tdi. k&n not such a good idea then. useing the std syncro jx one now.

Could just do what I did and put your airfilter in the bottom of your westy cupboard you don't lose much space just have to move the cupboard floor up about 1" and you get to keep your snorkel. Putting the air filter in the rear light will run the risk of hydraulicing the engine if you go wading and air won't be as clean as from the snorkel but should be ok apart from that I'd imagine

http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid= ... =3&theater" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; We have fitted a couple of these behind rear lights, but if you want to keep the turbo fan then it would be really tight with the air duct and keep the diesel snorkel, or put the other side and use a petrol snorkel. They need a little work to make water tight but easy enough. The K&N are a little noisier due to there size but a little of extra soundproofing sorts that. They are 70mm outlet so an adapter in size required to the JX 60mm pipework.

Oops thought you meant not attached to snorkel

also have seen some cut down jx filter housings on brickyard which looked nice and may fit there. Is the k+n like the jx in terms of it being like a cyclone filter?

Cheers for that, exciting pics jed! I see you've moved the snorkel over to the other side, looks like you have a barrel chargecooler too, so why the need to move the snorkel over?
And lee, why is a K&N no good for a E-tdi? As going by jeds pics he has one and is going electronic

Just looked at that link dave, exactly what I'm thinking of doing, as for the turbo fan, I don't really think it does much does it? Only runs when the engine is off as far as I am aware.
I now also know that the pics jed posted are of your van and not his

claims of the oil in k&n filters contaminating the mass air hot wire. k&n discount this. i`m a little sceptical especially after the filter has had its 1st clean by the customer.

no should be fine. same applies with anything second hand.
claimed problem is that, as the air is sucked through the oiled filter, some of the oil gets sucked through also and deposits itself on the sensor. this effects its operation and reduces performance. i`ve never proven this but i have seen quite a few mass air meters faulty that run oiled filters. " saying that i`ve seen plenty faulty without oiled filters".
k&n have denyed this can or does happen. they are a fantastic filter system and i`ve used them on most of my rally cars and will continue to do so just not if they are running air mass sensors.

Ok, cheers for that lee. Just got outbid at the last minute, went for £50.
Think I'm sold on the idea of getting one now, so I'll just wait for a good deal to turn up
