I broke down on the way home from work the other night and the AA man said it could be the hall sender in the distributer ,is it a straight forward job to fix ??

Remove old distributor, amplifier, idle stabaliser, and blank off vacuum pipes. Fit 009 distributor. Set points gap & timimg. Drive away with smile on your face (until points need re-gapping after 5000 miles.) Incur wrath of 80-90 members who believe a 009 will kill your engine. :)

not going to kill your engine

yes the timing curve will be wrong but with the wera on all the bits cant see it matters, unless it creates a flat spot ect

BUT will say its a step backwards.

vans will do 200000miles + on an electronic setup no probs WITHOUT any adjusting ect

AND if your batterys flat its much easier to start with electronic ignition as only a small amout of power is needed to spark , unlike a points setup.

electronic will allow a very good spark even on slow turn over when lots of power is being drawn from the battery.

by the time you bought a 009 just repair the standard set up rather than go backwards!

i am suprised you havent fitted an Aircooled engine so you dont have a cooling system to worry about!

I have got an Aircooled engine

I will try going back to an electronic set-up one day if I can get a working set-up. The last time I tried either the Hall sensor or the amp gave up after 20 miles and I had to re-fit the 009 to get home.
