steering boots

Hi all,
I am going to replace the steering rack boots.
A couple of questions....
I am going to get a scissor type ball joint splitter. My experience so far is that my cheap Draper cup type splitter trashes the ball joint. What size jaw should I go for? The majority seem to have a 19/20mm jaw, is that big enough? Or do I need to look for one a bit bigger - suited to vans/trucks.
Also I know this is a cheat but has anyone got the boots on over the track rod ends!

Track rod ends will have to come off mate.

As Rob says, but remove the nut of the rod end and put back to justr before the nyloc grips and take a 2 or 3ib hammer and smack the arm where the rod end goes through a few times the shock often splits the seal and your home , that or go buy a couple of rod ends and have done with it

I guess they might vary a bit, but I did the o/s boot on our 1984 camper in the summer and the boot (from Brickwerks) fitted easily over the track rod end.
Getting the wider end onto the steering rack body was a whole different kettle of fish though!!

Same here, especially the last bit about the steering rack body!!!!

Phew, glad it wasn't just me being useless!! After many hours of swearing and getting it 'almost there' we ended up removing the rack from the chassis. That did mean we had an excuse to fit the Brickwerks polybushes, which as many others have said, make a huge difference.

I've now got another job that is starting to snowball!... I was going to get the boots from JK but my account wouldn't work (so this weekend will be Christmas shopping instead- argh)! I really wanted to get them from Brick werks but they are on order... I guess I should wait for Brickwerks and get some rack bushes as well and do the whole lot it may prove easier.
