Same as mine, 1982 non turbo 1600 diesel. Smoke on start up is normal for me. Havent changed injectors but have changed glow plugs, WITH INJECTOR PUMP IN PLACE. 8mm ring spanner with grease on it, a shoelace to pull ring spanner, flatblade to start nut on glowplug. I tied the 12m spanner to the 8m spanner with the shoelace, it helps recover when you drop the 8m spanner. Hope this helps.

Hello,

agreed - check the operation of your glow plugs - check the fusible link in the black box in the engine bay. You can verify if they're getting power using a multimeter, and get an idea of their health by checking the resistance. I'd do that before changing them. I would also check the timing - have you been using the cold start lever - does that help at all?

Hi

Since the inner cable on my cold start cable broke ,,,,,mine does the same... :(

Its unburnt diesel causing the smoke.

Manually putting the lever "on" it starts with no smoke but you cant leave it in the on position when warmed up.

I have had no luck finding a replacement... its an early diesel with the mini choke style lever rather than the more common T shaped lever - sometimes I do the glo plugs twice before starting and that stops the smoking.

May bodge a rod thru through from the engine bay to the cab just till i can find the right guage wire to replace the broken inner - or find a replacement

Just a bit embarassing but clears as soon as I pull away

You are looking for a Bowden cable - these were originally the solid cabled ones but nowadays is applied to the flexible ones also which leads to confusion.

like this here.

I am assuming that you have tried VW? You can look for stop cables and choke cables also - I don't know what length you need.
