Starting to plan a trip over to Normandy next Summer, want to have a look round the many D day museums and beaches. Any recomendations, dos and don't.
Im thinking of doing Newhaven Dieppe ferry to save driving down from Calais...

i have done that coast 3 times now...and love it more and more.

look up a place callen Houlgate....its brilliant. great municipal site...(and a good commercial site just along the road but 3 times more expensive) could not ask for a better place for about 15 euro / night.
its dead easy to just tootle up and down the coast...loads of good empty beaches, nice non tourist towns....and places like Honfluer for a special day out.

you cant go wrong

first year I did Poole to Cherbourg...pricy but handy
2nd year Dover / calais....+ about 5 hrs easy driving
this year Portsmouth to Caen...best yet....(but again pricy)

Hi,

I have a familly house in Le Rozel close to Les Pieux and I recommand it! it's really awesome and peaceful!

A very special place to go mate. I have been many times(i take a school trip there every year).Check out the municipal camp-site in Arromanches....a brilliant place. There are also loads of places to camp for free..there is an aire just next to the camp site in arromanches. The list of places to visit is vast...but well advertised...all within a short drive. do you have kids...if you do ..take em to Festyland for a day out...'tis ace.We usually go via Le Havre. cheers.

Municipal site in Arromanches was very nice as is the town. Normandy on the whole is really lovely,Hornfleur and Pont l'eveque(home of the stinkiest cheese) are two of my faves. The D day sites, museums and cemeteries are very evocative. I can recommend the local cidre
The drive from Calais is not bad an easy 5ish hours, though I tend to hit the coast road from Calais over Cap gris nez via Wissant for the amazing views over the Channel.

Agreed, plus try the Cidre Cheese (camembert cured in cidre) ... most excellent with Jambon de Paris on a baguette. Pont l'Eveque is beautiful, as are Deuville and Trouville.

It's 174 miles on the Peage to Honfleur via the Pont du Normandy

I can 3rd that. I was at the municipal site in Arromanches in May 2011 & is was great. I would also recommend the municipal sites at Honfleur ( ?Camping La Phare?) & the one in the middle of Basse Normandie at Falaise ( in the shadow of Bill Le Conq's castle).

stayed at both Arromanches and Honfleur (la Phare)....both nice but the one at Houlgate is in a different league ( caravan club standard) and the town and beach is great

I went there in 1997. It's a very moving experience. It's roughly 15km north west of Limoges. I would like to go back there one day.

Julie, you have a very good memory but I think the D day beaches will keep me busy for the week...That village is still on the to - do list though..

If you get the time go to Falaise - great municipal site at the foot of the castle (William the Conquerers old pad). Was the scene of a rather large battle in WW2. Also St Mare Eglise (sic) - 101st airborne museum. Point de hoc is a bit of a mad place - the shell holes etc make it look like a luner landscape. In general the whole of Normandy is great - enjoy!

slightly of the point,but i hope you are considering doing a photo journal as it is a trip i have allways wanted to do ,keep us updated with pics,hope all goes well and maybe when my kids are older i can give it a go
