Just had a drive this morning, everything fine, then accelerated away and boom, no gears and a scraping sound!. One axle is turning even though no gears are selected. I will stick up a video in a bit. I take it its not the clutch, this has been crunching into reverse for quite a while. Oh it has a ej 2.2 in it, gearbox was supposedly done by cogbox with a freeway flyer, which it definately has in it.

would it be the diff?

Can you take the gearbox out and leave the enginge in? i guess you can.

Sure its not broken bolts on the end of one driveshaft? Common.

When the cv joint bolts give up the ghost it is usually as you pull off from a standstill. Many of us have been there and got the t-shirt. Dirty job but not that difficult. Usually the ones on the wheel side as they are more difficult for people to torque up correctly.

have you checked the bolts yet?

Looks like it from the video - outside cv joint bolts gone.

can you take the rear wheel shaft out from the inside or do i have to take the whole apart?

mnmmm anyone think an easy out would work if i take disconect the driveshaft? thats a hope right there

if you undo the 46mm castle nut it is just possible to pull the driveshaft complete with the stub axle out inwards and sort out any damaged stripped threads etc, before reassembly, but getting the stub axle back in through the bearings can be a pig as the centre spacer floats and getting it lined up can require 2 peeps and some ingenuity

Or he may be lucky and it goes in easily like mine when I had to do that. Luck of the draw I suppose.

thanks for input everyone, didnt have a 46mm socket nor did halfords. Will try to borrow one from work this week.

You'll certainly need to get the stub axle out as the remains of those broken bolts will still be in the flange on the end and you can't refit until you do. Bit of a faff to remove but bolt remains will come out if you fix stub in a vice and gently tap remains round with a sharp screwdriver or similar to get them moving. I've had this happen so don't feel you've been singled out. Bit of naffing around involved in removing shaft from gearbox end too as now theres nothing to keep the shaft still. Case of getting your wrench/allen key at the right angle to shift bolts without spinning shaft round - you soon get the knack though.

Ok,all done. Shaft came out easy and went back in easy. Only thing that bothers me is that i didnt pit a paper gasket on the cv ends , as no one i could find sold them, only online as part of a cv kit. The wheel side didnt have one when i took it off. Is this bad?.

Everything was great, took it for a spin and somehow blew the tyre valve clean off a 3 week old tyre, ran it flat. Dead. This process somehow put a massive deep scratch in my freshly polished wheel. 
